Μου κάνει εντύπωση πόσο συχνά αντιμετωπίζουμε τις σχέσεις Ελλάδας-Κύπρου-Ισραήλ-Τουρκίας σαν ένα απομονωμένο «γεωπολιτικό θέμα», ενώ την ίδια στιγμή θεωρούμε ότι η ενέργεια, η μετανάστευση, η ασφάλεια, η τρομοκρατία και οι υποδομές αποτελούν διαφορετικά και ανεξάρτητα πεδία.

Δεν είναι.

Η ενεργειακή γεωπολιτική της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου συνδέεται αναπόφευκτα
🟢με το ποιος ελέγχει ή προστατεύει θαλάσσιες ζώνες, λιμένες, αγωγούς, ηλεκτρικές διασυνδέσεις και άλλες κρίσιμες υποδομές
🟢με τις σχέσεις μεταξύ των κρατών της περιοχής
και
🟢με το κατά πόσο η Ευρώπη μπορεί να διαφοροποιήσει τις ενεργειακές της διαδρομές χωρίς να αντικαταστήσει μία στρατηγική εξάρτηση με μία άλλη.

Το ίδιο ισχύει για τις μεταναστευτικές ροές.
Δεν εμφανίζονται σε γεωπολιτικό κενό.
Πόλεμοι, περιφερειακή αστάθεια, σύνορα, διαδρομές διακίνησης, σχέσεις με τρίτες χώρες και οι επιλογές των κρατών της περιοχής επηρεάζουν το ευρύτερο περιβάλλον μέσα στο οποίο διαμορφώνονται και αντιμετωπίζονται αυτές οι ροές.

Και προφανώς, όταν μιλάμε για την Ανατολική Μεσόγειο, η Τουρκία, λόγω γεωγραφίας και περιφερειακού ρόλου, αποτελεί μέρος αυτής της εξίσωσης.

Ακόμη και ζητήματα τρομοκρατίας και περιφερειακής ασφάλειας συνδέονται με τη Συρία, τη Γάζα και τον Λίβανο, με δίκτυα και μη κρατικούς δρώντες, με τις θαλάσσιες και χερσαίες οδούς και με τις διαφορετικές στρατηγικές των κρατών που επιχειρούν στην περιοχή.

Γι’ αυτό θεωρώ προβληματικό να περιορίζεται όλη αυτή η συζήτηση σε μια γενική ταμπέλα του τύπου «η διαμάχη με την Τουρκία και οι σχέσεις με το Ισραήλ».

Αυτό είναι μόνο ένα μέρος της εικόνας.

Η Ανατολική Μεσόγειος είναι ένα διασυνδεδεμένο σύστημα: ενέργεια, ασφάλεια, κυριαρχία, υποδομές, μεταναστευτικές ροές, περιφερειακές συγκρούσεις και διεθνείς συμμαχίες αλληλεπιδρούν μεταξύ τους.

Μπορεί κανείς να διαφωνεί με τις αναλύσεις που παρουσιάζονται, να έχει διαφορετική ανάγνωση ή να επιλέγει ποια θέματα τον ενδιαφέρουν περισσότερο. Αλλά για να κατανοήσουμε οποιοδήποτε από αυτά τα ζητήματα σε βάθος, δεν μπορούμε να απομονώνουμε το ένα από το άλλο.

«Ο πόλεμος με την Τουρκία δεν είναι πλέον αδιανόητος».

Μία από τις πιο αιχμηρές τοποθετήσεις του Shay Gal στη συνέντευξή μας.

Ο Gal ξεκαθαρίζει ότι ούτε το Ισραήλ, ούτε η Ελλάδα, ούτε η Κύπρος επιδιώκουν πόλεμο με την Τουρκία. Υποστηρίζει, όμως, ότι ένα σοβαρό κράτος οφείλει να είναι σε θέση «να πολεμήσει, να αποτρέψει και να προλάβει» ακόμη και ένα ανεπιθύμητο σενάριο.

Και συνδέει σε μία ενιαία εικόνα όσα θεωρεί διαφορετικούς μοχλούς πίεσης της Άγκυρας: τα κατεχόμενα στην Κύπρο, τη Συρία, τα δίκτυα της Hamas, πυραύλους μεγάλου βεληνεκούς, drones, τη Σομαλία, το Akkuyu και την Ανατολική Μεσόγειο.
Η θέση του;

«Η απάντηση δεν μπορεί να είναι ευγενική ενόχληση. Πρέπει να είναι ετοιμότητα».

Teach the Pontic Greek Genocide — NOT the ‘Nazi-Like’ Blue Homeland

Dr Nikos Michailidis argues that international recognition of the Pontic Greek Genocide is not enough.

Turkey itself, he says, must recognize it and teach it in Turkish schools.

Instead of educating young Turks about what he describes as the crimes committed against the Greeks of Pontus, Michailidis argues that they are exposed to historical revisionism and the “Nazi-like” expansionist doctrine of the Blue Homeland.

His argument is stark:
What a country teaches its children about the past shapes the political culture of its future.

Recognition.�Education.�Museums.�Historical memory.
Not denial. Not revisionism.

Turkey Is ERASING Greek Pontus - “The Final Stage of Genocide”

First the people. Then their memory.

Dr Nikos Michailidis argues that the Turkish state is attempting to erase the remaining Greek cultural identity of Pontus and Asia Minor, including monuments, churches, monasteries, music, the Pontic lyra and even traditional dances.

His most provocative example: the Pontic Greek Χορόν (Choron/Horon) being presented internationally as a “Turkish traditional dance.”

For Michailidis, this goes far beyond cultural appropriation.

He describes the erasure of the identity attached to surviving Greek heritage as the “final stage” of the Pontic Greek Genocide.

Can you preserve a people’s culture while erasing the people who created it from its history?

«Το ΝΑΤΟ θα έπρεπε να ντρέπεται. Θα έπρεπε πραγματικά να ντρέπεται. Αν η Τουρκία ζητούσε σήμερα να ενταχθεί στο ΝΑΤΟ, δεν θα πληρούσε τις προϋποθέσεις. Απλώς δεν θα τις πληρούσε.»

Μια ιδιαίτερα αιχμηρή τοποθέτηση από τον Endy Zemenides, ο οποίος θέτει ευθέως υπό αμφισβήτηση τον τρόπο με τον οποίο το ΝΑΤΟ και οι δυτικές πρωτεύουσες εξακολουθούν να αντιμετωπίζουν την Τουρκία, παρά τις πολιτικές και τη στάση της Άγκυρας.

Στη συζήτησή μας, ο Zemenides υποστηρίζει ότι στις Βρυξέλλες εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν εκείνοι που θεωρούν ότι «χρειάζονται την Τουρκία», ενώ αναλύει παράλληλα τις ισορροπίες που διαμορφώνουν την πολιτική της Ουάσιγκτον απέναντι στην Άγκυρα υπό τον Πρόεδρο Donald Trump.

Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά κάνει σε δύο σχέσεις: στη στάση του Trump απέναντι στον Recep Tayyip Erdoğan και στον ιδιαίτερα ισχυρό ρόλο του Αμερικανού Πρέσβη στην Τουρκία, Tom Barrack. Όπως επισημαίνει ο Zemenides, ο ρόλος του Barrack δεν περιορίζεται στην Άγκυρα, αλλά επεκτείνεται σε κρίσιμα περιφερειακά ζητήματα που αφορούν τη Συρία, το Ιράκ και τον Λίβανο.

Και παρά την κριτική που δέχεται ο Barrack ακόμη και από τμήματα του κινήματος MAGA, για τον Zemenides υπάρχει ένας παράγοντας που έχει ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα: η προσωπική εμπιστοσύνη που του δείχνει ο Πρόεδρος Trump.

Τι σημαίνουν όλα αυτά για το ΝΑΤΟ, τις σχέσεις ΗΠΑ-Τουρκίας και την αμερικανική πολιτική στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και την ευρύτερη περιοχή;

“NATO should be ashamed of itself. NATO should be absolutely ashamed of itself. Turkey, if it was up for NATO membership today, would not qualify. Would just not qualify.”

A forceful assessment from Endy Zemenides, who challenges the way NATO and Western capitals continue to approach Turkey despite Ankara’s policies and conduct.

In our conversation, Zemenides argues that there are still those in Brussels who believe they “need Turkey,” while also pointing to the dynamics shaping Washington’s approach to Ankara under President Donald Trump.

He focuses in particular on two relationships: Trump’s attitude toward Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the influential role of U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack. As Zemenides notes, Barrack’s remit extends well beyond Ankara, encompassing major regional files including Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

And despite criticism of Barrack even from parts of the MAGA movement, Zemenides sees one factor as especially important: President Trump’s personal confidence in him.

What does all of this mean for NATO, for U.S.–Turkey relations, and for American policy in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region?

Is Erdoğan’s geopolitical position the result of master strategy or extraordinary luck?

Endy Zemenides argues that Erdoğan has repeatedly “fallen into” strategic advantages: in Syria, the Caucasus and, more broadly, through the war in Ukraine, uncertainty over America’s commitment to NATO, and Europe’s defence weaknesses.

His verdict? If the book on Erdoğan is ever written: “Better lucky than good.”

Greece will never match Turkey's population. It doesn't need to.

Jake Sotiriadis argues that the conventional numbers can distract us from the real question of deterrence.

“The population of these two countries don't really matter. This is about investing in smart defense technology...”

His argument is not that size or military mass is irrelevant. It is that Greece does not have to compete with Turkey symmetrically.

The alternative is smarter.

Invest in advanced defence technology.
Network the Hellenic Armed Forces. Connect platforms and capabilities. Deepen interoperability. And strengthen the strategic architecture connecting Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the United States.

But there is a crucial distinction between having military capabilities and actually deterring an adversary.

An impressive weapons inventory is not deterrence by itself.
The other side has to believe that your capabilities work, and that you are prepared to use them if necessary.

As Jake puts it:
“Because that's the key point. It has to be credible. That's really the essence of deterrence.”

So perhaps Greece should stop asking how it can match Turkey's scale.

The better question is:
How does Greece make Turkey believe that aggression would cost more than it could possibly gain?
