What’s the most jargon‑filled phrase you’ve ever heard at work, and what did it really mean? Doublespeak (a term coined from Orwell’s 1984) refers to language that disguises or reverses meaning to manipulate perception. And it’s alive and well in toxic workplaces.
⚠️ Why corporate doublespeak matters:
- Obscures truth: Psychological safety suffers when plain speech is avoided.
- Increases stress: Vague language leads to confusion and anxiety.
- Erodes trust: Jargon signals that spin matters more than honesty.
- Avoids accountability: Especially at leadership level.
- Silences dissent: By labelling disagreement as “negativity” or “misalignment.”
- Leads to burnout: As overwork and under-support are normalised.

// Have you experienced this at some point? Have you ever looked back and realised that your worst situations paved the way for your best life? What gift, strength, or trait did you discover in yourself, one that turned out to be especially useful to you and to others? //

In my life, I’ve always found that what appeared to be a setback, or even a collapse, was, in fact, a blessing in disguise.

If you’ve grown weary in a role that once excited you, become bored sick of a career you thought was your calling, lost your job, or find yourself in a workplace that drains more than it gives, it may feel as though the ground beneath you is shifting, sinking, even.

But what if this is exactly what needed to happen for clarity to emerge?
What if the setback is pointing towards a potential you haven’t yet dared to imagine?

Frequently, it’s only when the path we’ve been walking disappears that we begin to look within, and look up. And in that moment, as frightening as it may be, we must make space for this question:

What am I really meant to do?

Careers, like people, evolve. But we humans are prone to clinging to what’s familiar, even if it’s quietly soul-destroying, simply because it feels stable. That’s why it often takes a major disruption to awaken the gifts we’ve sidelined, the voice we’ve silenced, the purpose we’ve postponed.

You’re not lost.
You’re being redirected.

And this isn’t the end.
It’s the edge, of your glory.
