As we close out Black History Month, we celebrate the rich storytelling traditions of the Haitian tale “Lasirèn ak Labalèn”—The Mermaid and the Whale. This beautiful story, passed down through generations, speaks of strength, wisdom, and the deep connection between the sea and its creatures in Haitian folklore.
We were honored to have this story (episode 4) read by the incredible Sasha Compére, whose own family comes from Haiti. Her voice and singing brings this tale to life, carrying forward the power of Haitian heritage and the magic of oral storytelling.
Though Black History Month ends today, the stories and voices of Black culture remain timeless. Let’s continue to listen, learn, and uplift them every day.
