Imagine a huge pie -- about the size of your living room! We're going to call that pie the Walmart company pie and we're going to slice that pie into a million slices with each slice representing a share. The pie is the stock and the slices are the shares.
If an investor owns just one slice (share) that investor is going to serve as a shareholder of that company and a shareholder is actually an owner of that company! Now that person may be a very, very minor owner of the company, but that person is an owner indeed!
