When Life Gives You Tangerines (Netflix) is based on a true story.

Ae-soon and Gwan-sik were inspired by a real couple from Jeju Island. Her name was Hong Kyung-ja. She was born in 1950. Her life was hard from the start. She lost her mother at five. She raised her younger siblings. She dove for octopus and sold them to buy food. She wasn’t allowed to go to school but she fought for it anyway.

She fell in love with a boy she grew up with. He was also a diver. They dated for six years before getting married. He supported her through everything. Even when she became a village leader, he stood by her. In 2002, he was given an award for being a loving husband. They had three children and built a quiet, strong life together.

Seven years ago, he died.

The show followed the same path. Gwan-sik also died first. This made the story even more painful for those who knew the truth.

The drama is not just fiction. It’s a tribute. To a love that was real. To a woman who gave everything. And to a man who stayed.
