From his side proceeds a vine on whose branches sixteen half-length figures of members of the order are, each named by a scroll. At the top of the vine stands the Virgin with the Child on her arm. Around St Dominic stand six further figures, including Saint Peter of Verona on the bottom left with a wound in his head to indicate his martyrdom by an assassin’s blade.

Today is the feast day of Saint Agatha, a Roman-era martyr from Sicily. She’s been depicted holding a platter of breasts since the 6th century, although the earliest martyrologies don’t mention the details of her martyrdom.
