Climate change affects women more than men due to a combination of social, economic, and cultural inequalities, especially in lower-income and climate-vulnerable regions.

Rural and coastal women, especially from Indigenous or ethnic groups, are among the most affected while having the least voice in climate solutions. Empowering them is critical not just for gender justice but for building truly resilient communities.

Climate change is causing significant physical and biological changes in the oceans, affecting fishermen's activities, fish populations, and livelihoods.

Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and altered fish migration patterns disrupt fishing activities, reducing fish populations and potentially leading to conflicts. Fish are moving to new areas to find suitable habitats, affecting fish distribution and abundance. Changes in water temperature and salinity affect fish reproduction and growth, potentially leading to reduced fish populations. Increased algal blooms can poison fish and shellfish, impacting human health and fishing. Socioeconomic impacts include reduced catch and income, increased competition and conflict, and the vulnerability of small-scale fishing communities.

Adaptation strategies include ecosystem-based management, diversification of fishing practices, and community-based adaptation, involving fishermen, scientists, and policymakers.

The past decade has been the ten warmest on record, with temperatures expected to reach 1.5°C within five years. Experts predict a temperature increase of 2.6-3.1°C this century due to emissions reduction pledges. Climate scientists are concerned that temperature changes defy models and outpace predictions. Current efforts to monitor and manage heat-related risks face barriers such as lack of accepted definitions, limited cooperation, and low public awareness. A comprehensive approach prioritising long-term resilience is needed, including phasing out fossil fuels.
