Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, a name etched in the annals of Pakistan's military history, exemplified unwavering commitment to duty and unshakeable resolve in the face of adversity. Born in 1928 in Hong Kong, Major Bhatti migrated to Pakistan with his family after independence and joined the Pakistan Army in 1950. He was commissioned in the Punjab Regiment and rose through the ranks, earning recognition for his exceptional leadership and bravery.
Major Bhatti's journey to becoming a national hero began with his academic excellence, which earned him admission to the prestigious Pakistan Military Academy (PMA). He consistently ranked among the top performers, earning the Sword of Honor and Norman Medal. His instructors remembered him as a cadet who combined intellectual capabilities with remarkable physical prowess.
Defending Lahore
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, Major Bhatti was assigned to defend a crucial position along the BRB Canal in Lahore. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he organized his defenses with tactical brilliance, repulsing wave after wave of Indian attacks. For six consecutive days, Major Bhatti remained at the forward position, supervising the strengthening of defenses and directing artillery fire.
Martyrdom and Legacy
On September 12, 1965, Major Bhatti was struck by an enemy tank shell while directing fire on Indian positions. He embraced martyrdom, but his sacrifice will never be forgotten. He was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military honor for valor.
