Huntington Beach neighborhood swamped by flooding
Southern California's recent storm caused major flooding, including in Huntington Beach where AIR7 captured a neighborhood swamped with floodwater.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- The recent storm to soak Southern California caused major flooding Friday in Orange County where some neighborhoods were overwhelmed by water.

AIR7 was in Huntington Beach over the area of Edinger Avenue and Goldenwest Street, near the 405 Freeway, where streets were inundated.

At nearby Greer Park South, the park was completely flooded. Crews were on scene pumping water from the park into the storm drain.

Firefighters and police responded to numerous calls throughout the night regarding flooding, particularly, in the north side of Huntington Beach, according to city manager Travis Hopkins.

"The response included rescues from stranded vehicles due to flooded streets and other flood-related calls," Hopkins said in a statement. "City staff continue to monitor the situation, and crews are ensuring the storm drain system is operational and are assessing any damage."

One person was killed after a massive tree toppled onto two cars in Winnetka Friday.

The fatal incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. on North Mason Avenue near Sherman Way.

Neighbors were shocked by the horrific scene.

"I just couldn't believe what I was seeing," said Stan Holloway.

"It's really tragic, I mean, it can happen to anyone," Maudi Cameron added.

Video from AIR7 showed the large tree on top of a white car and across lanes as first responders worked to recover the body from the driver's seat.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the driver was heading north on Mason Avenue when the decades-old, 20-foot tree uprooted and came down.

"The tree decided to give out, smashed the driver while he was inside the vehicle," said LAPD Officer Emanuel Barbu.

When LAFD and LAPD arrived, the force and weight of the tree left them with only one option to recover the driver - cut their way in.

"They had to pry the doors open, cut the tree in half, cut branches and do everything they could to get inside of the vehicle," said Barbu.

A second car was hit, but no one inside that vehicle was hurt. Meanwhile, neighbors say the sound of the collapse was so sudden, they didn't realize what had happened.

"This one was just instantaneous. It hit and it was like, OK, something devastating happened," said Holloway, who lives just a few feet away from the wreck and was one of the first people to walk up to the crushed SUV. "You never think it would happen to you or in your neighborhood."

Cameron said she's noticed the tree's roots pushing through the sidewalk for years. She now questions whether there were warning signs long before Friday afternoon.

"I feel like it was ready to come down anyway because the roots were already popping up through the cement," she said. "I think with the rain and the wind, it was just time for it to go."

The identity of the victim was not immediately released, and no further information was available.

A federal judge on Friday prohibited the Internal Revenue Service from sharing sensitive taxpayer data with ICE to aid its nationwide immigration crackdown.

U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued an injunction that bars the IRS from passing along the sensitive information - including home addresses - to aid in civil immigration enforcement, concluding the policy was arbitrary and violates a law that protects taxpayer confidentiality.

"Plaintiffs' members face an imminent risk that the confidential address information they have provided to the IRS will be impermissibly used by ICE for civil immigration enforcement," Judge Kollar-Kotelly wrote.

A coalition of small businesses and unions sued to stop the controversial policy, which marked a significant departure from the IRS's earlier approach of strict confidentiality. In April, IRS agreed to begin sharing confidential information about taxpayer's addresses, and by August, the IRS disclosed information about approximately 47,000 taxpayers.

Judge Kollar-Kotelly said that policy violated a federal law that protects taxpayer information as well as the Administrative Procedure Act. Friday's order expands on an earlier decision that temporarily blocked the sharing of taxpayer data.

"This is an important win for millions of people in America whose information has been threatened by the Trump-Vance administration, and represents the first injunction against this unlawful data sharing," said Democracy Forward CEO Skye Perryman. "Paying your taxes does not forfeit your right to privacy."

Section 6103 of the federal tax code requires the IRS to keep individual taxpayer information confidential with certain limited exceptions, which includes law enforcement agencies "for investigation and prosecution of non-tax criminal laws" with approval from a court, according to the agency's website.

The IRS has allowed immigrants without legal status to file income tax returns with individual tax numbers, or ITINs. These immigrants contributed $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes using borrowed or fraudulent Social Security numbers, according to the Bipartisan Policy Cent

Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced she will resign from office, an unexpected turn for the high-profile Republican.

One of Donald Trump's Maga superstars and staunchest defenders, the Georgia congresswoman's relentless calls for releasing files related to late pa******le Jeffrey Epstein and recent criticism of some of his policies led to a bitter public feud.

After the US president labelled her a "traitor", she said in a video announcing her departure: "I refuse to be a 'battered wife' hoping it all goes away and gets better."

Trump, who had threatened to support a Republican challenger to unseat Greene, called her resignation "great news for the country" in an interview with ABC News.

"For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD," he later wrote on Truth Social.

"Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country!"

Greene said in her video statement, posted on social media, that she would leave the US Congress on 5 January 2026.

She said that she did "not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms".

She had been one of the loudest demanding the release of documents related to Epstein, an issue that once united Trump and his base but has since become divisive.

Trump had spent months arguing that the issue was a distraction concocted by his political detractors to divert attention from his administration's achievements.

"Standing up for American women who were r***d at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for," Greene said in her resignation letter.

Over the last few months, she has gone on a number of high-profile news shows and was critical of Trump and fellow Republicans.

She took issue with the president not doing enough to bring down living costs for voters and criticised his policy of introducing tariffs on imports. But above all, she criticised his administration for not releasing documents related to Epstein.

Trump responded last week in a series of social media posts, calling Greene a "traitor" and "wacky". He said she should be unseated and vowed to back a challenger for her place in Congress.

Days after their feud boiled over, with a growing number of Republicans calling for their release, Trump reversed course and said he would support their publication. He signed a bill this week that forces the US Justice Department to release the documents within 30 days.

Greene was elected to Congress in 2020 amid a backdrop of headlines over her support and promotion of QAnon conspiracies, including claiming school shootings and the 9/11 terror attacks were staged. She has since apologised and sought to distance herself from those comments.

In the video announcing her resignation, Greene ticked off a list of political achievements. She noted in her resignation letter that the comments from Trump were "hurtful".

While she announced her departure from the House of Representatives, US media reports have indicated Greene has shown an interest in running for state office - either as Georgia governor or for a Senate seat.

The president has commented publicly about those ambitions, writing on Truth Social during their public feud that he had previously told her that she shouldn't run for either of those offices due to poor public polling.

Greene has since said she did not plan to run for either of those offices.

Before their public falling out, Trump and Greene had been close allies in championing the "America First" agenda. She joined him on the campaign trail and was one of the Republicans most vocal about Trump's false claims that he'd won the 2020 presidential election against Joe Biden.

Her departure will further close the gap in the Republican-led House of Representatives, where the party only holds a handful of seats more than Democrats. Control of the chamber will be up for grabs in the 2026 midterm elections next November.

Uefa has apologised after videos of Scotland fans celebrating the team qualifying for the World Cup were removed from social media.

The Scottish Football Supporters Association (SFSA) received emails from the European football governing body stating it had shared footage showing TV coverage of the Scotland v Denmark game on X without permission.

Posts shared by the SFSA showed fans across the country celebrating Tuesday 's match, where Scotland secured a World Cup spot for the first time since 1998.

Uefa said many videos were "wrongly picked up by content protection agencies" and taken down due to copyright infringement. The SFSA's account was also blocked.

SFSA co-founder Paul Goodwin had questioned the fairness of the claim.

He said: "It is hard to believe that Uefa are so out of touch that they demanded that X take down images of joyous fans in bars in Glasgow, Stirling and Dundee where some of our members were celebrating a glorious evening for the nation.

"It really smacks of folk who have no idea about football, making decisions."

Pope Leo XIV took part in a question-and-answer session with 15,000 American Catholics at the national Catholic youth conference in Indianapolis, Indiana on 21 November.

Leo, the first US pope, answered questions about the Catholic faith and gave advice on how to make friends in school.

It is not the first time that Pope Leo has spoken about AI. In a June conference speech, he noted how humanity must continue "serious reflection and ongoing discussion on the inherently ethical dimension of AI, as well as its responsible governance."

A man falsely accused of shoplifting after being added to a facial recognition watchlist has warned it "could happen to anyone".

Byron Long, 66, was told to leave a B&M store at Cardiff Bay Retail Park and accused of stealing £75 worth of goods on a previous visit - until a review of CCTV footage showed he had paid for his shopping and not stolen anything.

B&M has apologised to Mr Long and offered him a £25 voucher, which he has rejected, while the Big Brother Watch campaign group has made a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office on his behalf.

Facial recognition company Facewatch said it was a case of "human error, not a failure of the technology".

Mr Long said his mental health issues worsened after the incident on 29 April and described B&M's apology as "measly words without meaning".

"They don't recognise the dangers and harm they can cause with the power they have," he said.

"My interaction has gone out the window. I suffer with my mental health so it's important for me to get out," he said.

"It was a horrible experience and I haven't been back there since.

"I'm worried it will happen again."

How does facial recognition work?
Facewatch is a private company whose facial recognition system is used by retailers across the UK.

The technology works by "matching faces against known offenders" as they enter a premises, through a cloud-based facial recognition system.

The system then sends an alert to staff for review, who then confirm or refute the match.

A spokesperson for Facewatch said: "Our system worked exactly as it should, and as soon as we were informed by the retailer, the individual's data was immediately deleted in line with our strict procedures."

B&M confirmed that Mr Long's data has now been removed.

"This was a simple case of human error, and we sincerely apologise to Mr Long for any upset caused," a spokesperson said.

They said reported incidents like this were rare and "Facewatch services are designed to operate strictly in compliance with UK GDPR and to help protect store colleagues from incidents of aggressive shoplifting".

Jasleen Chaggar, legal and policy officer at Big Brother Watch, said: "Subjecting shoppers to biometric identity checks just to pick up groceries or purchase essentials is a chilling expansion of intrusive surveillance technology that is ripe for error and abuse.

"Levelling criminal accusations against people and blacklisting them without any threshold of investigation, due process or right to appeal has created a zone of privatised policing replete with shocking injustices.

"Any one of us could find ourselves misidentified by live facial recognition systems and have to prove our innocence against an algorithm that has wrongfully labelled us as a thief."

Mr Long has expressed concerns about his ability to challenge the allegation made against him by B&M.

He said if the CCTV had been deleted, which he was told was due to happen in three days, it would have left him unable to prove he had paid for his shopping and had not taken anything from the store.

"I knew I had done nothing wrong but you aren't given an opportunity to challenge, you are just branded as a thief," he said.

"I didn't shop around and immediately went to the till and paid for the cat treats.

"When I asked what goods I supposedly took, the staff couldn't tell me.

"They are criminalising customers. It could happen to anyone".

A UK government spokesperson said: "While commercial facial recognition technology is legal in the UK, its use must comply with strict data protection laws.

"Organisations must process biometric data fairly, lawfully and transparently, ensuring usage is necessary and proportionate.

"No one should find themselves in this situation. We will continue to work closely with the Information Commissioner's Office to ensure regulations remain effective as technology evolves and that individuals have a route to correcting these sorts of mistakes where they occur."

Eurotunnel, the operator of the Channel Tunnel, has halted its UK projects, claiming "unsustainable" levels of taxation has made any future investments "non-viable".

The company said it had been informed its business rates would increase by some 200% from next year.

It hit out at the government, arguing that the higher costs were "clearly contrary" to ambitions of growing the economy and increasing investment.

The Treasury said it would support firms "hit hardest" by tax hikes and would continue talks with affected industries over such concerns.

The outburst from Eurotunnel comes days ahead of next week's Autumn Budget, where Chancellor Rachel Reeves will set out the government's tax and spending plans.

Speaking to the BBC, Eurotunnel's chief executive Yann Leriche said: "All our investments, all our plans are becoming unsustainable.

"As you know, business rates, it's a property tax. And our property - the Channel Tunnel - has not changed. It's still the same tunnel, the same terminal, the same trains. Everything is equal.

"And so to face such an increase… is a real issue for us. Because we know in rail, we invest for the long term."

The potential 200% increase in business rates for Eurotunnel is a result of new calculations by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which provides the government with valuations and property advice used in setting taxation and benefits.

Mr Leriche said while discussions were ongoing, this could see its business rates rising from £22m to £65m.

A spokesperson for Eurotunnel said such a hike in business rates, along with other taxes, could put its total tax level at about 75% on UK earnings.

The VOA told the BBC the body "does not determine business rates" and that "next year's liability has not yet been confirmed".

"This unparalleled and unsustainable level of taxation makes any future investment in the UK non-viable," the Channel Tunnel said.

"It is therefore impossible to develop new services, create jobs, and pursue what is needed for the long-term development of our activities."

The company claimed it had "no other choice but to freeze our future investments in railway assets in the UK, starting in 2026".

The BBC has asked Eurotunnel what investments it has frozen. The Financial Times reported that its chief executive, Yann Leriche, told the newspaper it had scrapped plans to reopen a freight terminal in Barking and to run a new direct freight service from Lille.

The Channel Tunnel is an undersea tunnel linking southern England and northern France. Nicknamed "Chunnel", it comprises three tunnels, two rail tunnels used for freight and passenger trains, and a service tunnel.

The link between Folkestone and Calais is operated by Eurotunnel.

Separate company Eurostar, Eurotunnel's biggest customer, operates passenger services through the tunnel between London and a number of other European cities on the continent, including Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

A VOA spokesperson told the BBC it had engaged with Eurotunnel and their advisers "on multiple occasions over the past eighteen months to discuss their valuation and fully explain our approach".

"These discussions remain ongoing, and we are committed to continuing constructive engagement."

The spokesperson added Eurotunnel could formally challenge the valuation.

Ahead of the Budget, the Eurotunnel called on the government to "provide certainty on business rates".

The firm has not been alone in issuing warnings to the chancellor, with supermarket bosses claiming part of the government's business rates reforms posed a problem for its industry.

Business rates are a tax on non-domestic properties such as shops, pubs and offices.

It is expected that Reeves will confirm the rates businesses will have to pay at in the Budget, along with further details, which will come into force in April 2026.

The Treasury said in response to Eurotunnel's comments that it did not comment on "speculation around future changes to tax policy".

It said once it understood the "complete" revaluation picture, it would be in a position to "make final decisions" on support.

A Santa Ana man was sentenced Friday to 16 years and four months in state prison for a crash that killed a 5-year-old boy and critically injured his father and 6-year-old sister in Garden Grove last summer, prosecutors said. The driver, Ceferino Ascencion Ramos, 30, had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit when the collision occurred.

The incident took place on Sunday, July 7, 2024, shortly after 7 p.m. Angel Ramirez and Angela Hernandez-Mejia were riding e-bikes with their three young children near Haster Street and Twintree Lane. Angela led with the couple’s 7-month-old daughter in a bike trailer, while Angel followed with a trailer carrying their 5-year-old son, Jacob, and 6-year-old daughter.

A witness told police that the family was riding on the right side of the road when Ramos struck all five members and drove away. The witness followed Ramos until authorities could stop him. His blood alcohol level was later measured at .22, nearly three times the legal limit of .08.

Jacob Ramirez died at the scene. His father suffered a fractured skull and brain bleed and remained in a coma for weeks, undergoing surgery to address his injuries. The couple’s 6-year-old daughter was critically injured and had surgery; she turned seven the day after the crash. Angela and the 7-month-old daughter sustained minor injuries.

In court, the couple’s now 8-year-old daughter delivered a victim impact statement, grieving the loss of her younger brother. “I love Jacob so much. I don’t know why you killed him away from me,” she said. “He’s in heaven now.”

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer called the incident “a senseless tragedy,” emphasizing that the family had simply been riding their bikes on a summer evening when Ramos’ decision to drive while intoxicated ended the boy’s life.

Ramos pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, causing great bodily injury to multiple victims, driving under the influence causing injury, and fleeing the scene.

The world-famous Hollywood Sign, one of California’s most iconic and photographed landmarks, could be getting its own visitor center.

The nonprofit organization that manages the sign, The Hollywood Sign Trust, recently posted on social media that it is “playing with concepts” for a facility and asking the public to weigh in.

The post featured an AI-generated rendering based on at least one fan’s feedback. It depicts tourists riding a tram, similar to the one at the Getty Center, to a glass-encased structure in Griffith Park that includes a theater and a museum.

The image, which shows the Hollywood Bowl geographically out of place, is not meant to represent what the actual visitor center would look like.

“Head over to our website and let us know what you’d like to see,” The Trust wrote. The website has a Google form where fans can submit ideas and sign up for updates.

There is no timeline for the proposal to become reality. A spokesperson for The Trust told KTLA the project is still in the “very early planning stages.”

The Hollywood Sign, which originally read Hollywoodland, was constructed in 1923 to advertise an upscale real estate development. It gradually fell into disrepair until 1949, when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce repaired the sign and removed the word “land.”

The sign deteriorated again by the late 1970s, when it underwent a complete overhaul, at which point the Hollywood Sign Trust was established. The organization is also soliciting art, media and letters to be included in a time capsule that will be buried at the sign.

Los Angeles County officials are warning beachgoers to stay out of the water until at least noon on Monday after the recent rains.

Ocean water, “especially near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers,” may contain higher levels of bacteria after the recent storms, as well as “chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards,” the Department of Public Health said.

“This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand,” officials said.

Exposure to the contaminated water could lead to illness, and officials say the public should wait for 72 hours after rainfall ends before swimming or playing in the water
