Dr. Mary E. Walker—Civil War surgeon and the only woman ever awarded the Medal of Honor—is buried just steps away from my 4th great-grandparents, John and Sarah (Murphy) Apps.

It’s moments like this that remind me how our ancestors’ stories are interwoven with the world around them. Sometimes the neighbors in death were history makers in life.
