Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, tells BLESSING AKINLABI how the government is addressing environmental challenges, including open defecation and flooding, among others

What is the state government doing to address the hardship being faced by residents displaced by the recent flooding in the state?

For those who were affected by this relocation, particularly within the Isheri flood plain, we had predicted this and advised accordingly because of seasonal fluctuations in the flood pattern due to heavy rainfall. This season, the rain is expected to last for a longer time. The flood plain is so named because of the high tide that will come along with it, and this is not peculiar to Ogun State alone. It cuts across the entire coastal towns in Nigeria, the western sub-region because it is a regional phenomenon. I recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency gave us information about this pattern, which was issued around April, and at that point, we had two options: either elevate or relocate the people. Elevation means elevating your house above the seasonal tidal heights.

For example, around Kara and the Isheri areas, the height can be about 1.5 metres above the normal ground level and tidal height for the dry season; and for the rainy season, you should have about two meters and above. You will observe that some people who built houses in the area two meters and above that I mentioned don’t have much flooding within their homes. The challenge is the road infrastructure, as most of the roads are constructed below two meters, so people have problems accessing their property even if it is not flooded.

Israel releases 39 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons

A total of 39 Palestinian detainees have been released from Israeli prisons in exchange for a group of hostages held by Hamas.

They are accused of a range of offences, from throwing stones to attempted murder. Some were convicted while others were awaiting trial.

The group of 24 women and 15 teenage boys was released across the Beituniya checkpoint in the occupied West Bank.

The detainees were chosen from a list of 300 women and minors compiled by Israel.
Less than a quarter of those on the list have been convicted - the vast majority are being held on remand while awaiting trial. Most of those listed are teenage boys - 40% of them under the age of 18. There is also one teenage girl and 32 women.

Earlier, the road by Beituniya checkpoint, near Ramallah, was sharp with the smell of tear gas. Groups of Palestinian men and boys faced the Israeli army lining up on the road ahead.

The army fired rubber bullets and tear gas towards the crowd, to push them back.

Some of the young people gathered threw stones and tear gas canisters back towards the troops.

"It's a sign of hope for Palestinians and Israelis that the ceasefire will continue and the killing will stop," Mohammed Khatib, who was in the crowd, told the BBC.

Upon the prisoners' release, the bus that transported them inched its way through a sea of jubilant Palestinian supporters.

Through the windows, some of the prisoners could be seen dancing, one wrapped in a Palestinian flag. Outside, mobile phones were raised to the glass amid ululations and shouts of welcome and "God is great".

The Nigerian entertainment scene is indeed a glamorous one filled with razzmatazz. Recognised and respected worldwide, the major players in the Multi-Million dollar industry practically live like royalty.

Indeed, glamour is the major reason many youths want to play in that field; unbeknown to them, there is an ugly underbelly that is the stark reality and opposite of the shiny facade they see. TOFARATI IGE paints a graphic picture of how several entertainers endure harassment and bullying, all in the hope of making the limelight or remaining relevant in it

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Olayemi Cardoso, has said that the apex bank will be asking Deposit Money Banks to increase their capital base in order to service the $1tn economy projected by President Bola Tinubu.

This is as he noted that he knew that there was much work to be done in the way the apex bank ran its operations, adding that he would need the collaboration of all stakeholders.

Speaking on Friday at the 58th Annual Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in Lagos where he was the special guest of honour, Cardoso said, “In my recent speech at the 370th Bankers’ Committee meeting, I highlighted the economic agenda of the President. The administration has set an ambitious goal of achieving a GDP of $1tn over the next seven years.

High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has granted bail to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

He was granted bail in the sum of N300 million.

In a ruling on Wednesday, Justice Hamza Muazu held that Emefiele should produce two sureties, who must have landed property in the Maitama District of the FCT.

Emefiele was not in court during today’s proceedings, having been remanded at Kuje Prison last week.

Another FCT High Court had two weeks ago ordered his release in a fundamental human rights suit he instituted against the federal government.

Men of the Lagos state police command are currently on the trail of singer Seun Kuti. Some officers from the command visited his Allen Avenue home this morning to arrest him but met his absence. The officers were stationed at his Allen Avenue home but were later asked to leave the area.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali, ordered for Seun's arrest after a video of him assaulting a police officer surfaced online. Meanwhile, the officer he assaulted has reported to the command headquarters and has given his statement of what transpired between him and the singer.

Police have vowed to get him at all costs.

I Must Be Nigeria’s President, Says Obi

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has declared that he must be president of Nigeria.

Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, said this at the presentation of a book entitled: “Peter Obi: Many voices, one Perspectives”, in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Friday.

The book presentation was designed to raise fund to enable Mr Peter Obi pursue his ongoing election court case.

“Anyone who thinks I’m on transit is wasting his time. Let me tell you, I must be the president of this country. I’m sure of that. If it is not today, it must be tomorrow.”

“Other people who want to be, should come and tell us what they want to do, and how to do it. This is my country, I don’t have dual citizenship. If anyone thinks I am going to run away from Nigeria, they are lying.

“I have three engagements in Anambra and Lagos today. I will be speaking in Lagos tonight. We will not leave Nigeria. I am not in a hurry to become the president, but I know it must happen.

“For three years I was in court in Anambra to reclaim my governorship, just to challenge the process. Many people tried to discourage me, but I said even if the entire four years tenure elapsed for us to prove a point and correct the process, I will be fulfilled.

“I was in an event yesterday in Abuja, and it was World Food Organisation. I listened to report that stated that Nigeria will face intense hunger in years to come.

“It is Nigeria that will face hunger, not Peter Obi. The report listed Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as the states that will be worse hit, but those three states put together are five times larger in land mass of Israel, yet Egypt exports food, but Nigeria cannot feed itself.

“So we must cultivate a habit of doing the right thing. If we don’t do the right thing, it will consume us some day.”

“I must be the president of this country; if not today, it will be next time. I’m not desperate; I’m not in a hurry. I’m committed to cause of better Nigeria,” he said.

Obi also said he would respect the decision of the court in the ongoing electoral dispute.
