*NEW! Unmasking the Green Man Pocket Zine and limited edition T-Shirt now available to pre-order!*

Within the world of modern folklore, few images are so iconic as the Green Man. Here at Hwæt!, we are fascinated by this omnipresent yet elusive figure. His image has always held a power for us. But we have not, until now, sat down to think about why it is that he resonates so strongly with so many people. Why his is a story we long to tell and retell.

It’s an image of unspoken power, of quiet resilience. The foliate head. The leaf mask. But delving deep into the figure’s mercurial past reveals a murky, convoluted origin that doesn’t always fit with the prevailing narrative. In many ways the Green Man is the perfect emblem for British folk culture, but his story is also a reminder of its hazards. Often the idyllic past we crave is nothing but a lie, and the heritage we look for is more of a tangled web than a traceable lineage.

The Green Man’s long history is a complicated one, and you come to learn that what he represents is not quite so simple as first appearances might suggest. In this special edition pocket zine, we attempt to unmask the Green Man, not to kill the power he holds over us or anyone else, but to enrich it by finally coming to terms with who exactly he is and where exactly he comes from. Because it is only then that we might know what story it is we are telling.

We are also releasing a brand new limited edition shirt, featuring a unique Green Man design illustrated by the supremely talented . This can be purchased separately or in a bundle along with the pocket zine and an exclusive green man sticker.

Shirts are screenprinted by VinoSangre on Continental Clothing’s earth positive jersey t-shirt.

A6 zine, 46 pages, staple bound, printed on natural recycled paper.

Follow the link below to pre-order. Green Man zines and shirts will ship out at the end of September ✨

*ISSUE 6 STORYTELLING: FAIRY TALES - NOW AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER*

“Once upon a time…”

At once familiar and mysterious, accessible and cryptic, the world of fairy tale is an ever-elusive place filled with magic and beauty but also darkness and cruelty. How do we unravel these interweaving strands of story, where characters and narratives are sparse and abstract, yet the meanings are vast and complex?

For this issue we’re leaving behind the material landscape we’ve trodden before and setting off for the unknowable land of Elsewhere, a realm of wonder and peril, where monsters dwell in forest and castle alike, where faustian bargains are made and upheld, and where eternal themes of love, loss, pride, mortality, and greed are examined.

In this, the first instalment in a trilogy centered around storytelling, we delve deep into this unique off-shoot of the folk tale, setting out to reclaim these stories from the shackles of adolescence.

FEATURING:

- CHILDHOOD FEARS AND THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES
- VISCERAL HORROR AND MONSTROUS MOTHERS
- A FAIRY TALE TIMELINE
- ANGELA CARTER AND LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
- VISIONS OF THE BEAST
- DEALS WITH THE DEVIL
- MAGICAL WOMEN OF MEDIEVAL ROMANCE
- CANNIBALISM AND THE ULTIMATE TABOO
- POETRY: ‘WOLF SONG’ AND ‘WOOD WITCH’
- INTRUSIONS FROM FAERIE
- WITCH WAY: A WOODLAND PUZZLE

Including written contributions from .wear, , , and Team Hwæt!. As with each of our zines, this issue includes a themed reading list and watchlist, as well as a fairy tale-inspired playlist (via Tidal).

This weekend we had the honour of hosting a workshop at Moorforge Folk Festival at the incredible site of Moorforge Viking Settlement in Cumbria.

We've been involved with every Moorforge Festival so far and this one was just ✨magical✨

We got together 20 wonderful people to carve some ancient rock art motifs into lino and then create a range of beautiful prints from the carvings.

We started with a lovely talk from George about the mystery of these ancient petroglyphs and Bunty then showed everyone the lino carving ropes. Once adorned in our special Hwæt! aprons, they all got stuck in. Most of the folks in the workshop had never carved lino before, but every single person created some beautiful prints with their own reimagined cup and ring inspired designs that they then took home with them. We brought along some essential research books from our Hwæt! library to help inspire everyone.

Team Hwæt! have always been fascinated by ancient rock art and this workshop brought us all together to explore their mystery and beauty.

We were fortunate to be in wonderful surroundings, as we hosted the class in a reconstructed viking long house!

We will be bringing this workshop to our hometown of Leeds very soon so watch this space for announcements...

Thank you to Moorforge Folk Festival for having us ✨🪨✨

🌞HAPPY SOLSTICE 🌞

If you've been following our Holiday Travel Diaries you'll have seen that we have been visiting the magical isles of Orkney. We spent the solstice eve among the stunning stones of The Ring of Brodgar, which has also been referred to as the Temple of the Sun and is believed to have been aligned to the solstice sunrise.

Older than Stonehenge and considerably quieter, it sits amongst a vast landscape of ancient sites, most of which we visited during our trip. We were lucky enough to have the stones to ourselves, bar the odd passing pilgrim. As the skies turned pink, the huge crescent moon made an appearance, which really brought the landscape to life.

We still have a few highlights from our trip to share, and in all honesty, it's difficult to put into words (or pictures) how blown away we have been by this ancient landscape. It's safe to say that this moment was a true highlight and we will be basking in this memory for quite some time ✨

🌞Team Hwæt! is Out of Office!🌞

Our shop is still open but we won't be shipping until the end of the month, so please be patient if ordering from us 🙏

We are off to Orkney! Our absolutely incredible pal is taking us on a 10 day "Magical Mystery Tour" in her campervan (named Emily Spinach) and we are beyond excited. We've done many road trips with Katie in the past, and this one is going to be a good un! We will be driving up to the Highlands and then onto Orkney, stopping along the way for some surprise adventures en route. Katie has put together this MONUMENTAL folder of info and clues for us to decipher for each mini adventure on the itinerary. What an absolute diamond you are Katie!

We will be stopping to see some magical things, and probably some old stones and maybe some neolithic burial chambers, but WE DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW!! One thing we do know is that we will be spending the summer solstice sunrise among some of the oldest and most beautiful ancient stones in the UK.

It's all very exciting and we count our lucky stars every day that we have a wonderful pal like Katie to join us on our adventures (or in this case, to organise the adventure!)

Keep your eyes peeled for some travel diary posts as we uncover what mysteries lay in wait for us ✨👀✨

We've been working on some things... 🌿

As well as putting the finishing touches to issue no.6, we've been grinding away at another pocket zine which will be delving into a certain character from British folklore - The Green Man.

We spent the whole day yesterday building our very own foliate mask and after an early start to finalise his leafy visage we took it off into the woods today to capture him in his natural habitat.

Both zines we are working on have been a long time coming, but we are excited to finally be nearing completion on both of them. Watch this space for updates! 👀

🌞What. A. Weekend!🌞

Months and months of hard work and meticulous planning from ourselves and culminated in an overwhelmingly wonderful sold out weekend of folk, food and fun which we are never going to forget.

It was a bringing together of incredible people; the performers, the artists, the florists, the food vendors, a tarot reader, the dancers, a very generous brewery, our amazing sound tech, videographer and stage manager, the lovely venue staff and a beautifully attentive, engaged and passionate audience. It was a thoroughly wholesome affair from top to bottom and these astounding photos from .right.off capture it beautifully.

We cannot believe that it went so smoothly - it goes to show that when you get the right heads together, amazing things can happen ✨

Thank you to everyone involved, we are truly humbled. Would we be mad enough to do it all again?!
Quite possibly!

🌞SALT of the EARTH T-SHIRTS NOW AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER🌞

Following the huge sell-out success of our first ever folk festival we have decided to celebrate with a small run of t-shirts!

We had lots of folk at Salt of the Earth ask if we had t-shirts for sale... So we've made it happen!

We are doing a super limited run of shirts and screen printed posters which you can buy separately or as a bundle. If you buy the bundle, we will also throw in 4 special pub coasters. The shirts have been ordered from the wonderful guys at and are printed on earth positive off white t-shirts (because we all know pure white shirts rarely stay white!)
These will be shipped at the end of the month.

The art prints are screenprinted by Bunty of Team Hwæt! and .etc_ at their wonderful workplace . They are printed on heavyweight textured seaweed paper and are signed and numbered.

These are very limited so grab one before they go!

Happy May Day!

We cannot wait to welcome in the May with everyone this weekend at our Salt Of The Earth festival with .

We've gone all out for this weekend, including making this DIY Jack-in-the-Green at home! Bunty put this together over the last couple of weeks, and we're looking forward to it's debut appearance this weekend 🌿

Jack-in-the-Greens have been an integral part of May Day celebrations for hundreds of years, and are thought to have developed out of traditions involving milkmaids and chimney sweeps. Despite the abundance of greenery, Jack-in-the-Green is largely an urban tradition, involving a procession through a town or city with musicians and other characters in tow. So it’s a good way to bring the beauty of nature into the city, seeing a merging of town and countryside, of old and new.
