108 years ago today at 7.30 in the morning, British soldiers clambered out of their trenches and charged across No Man's Land. By the end of the day, 57,470 were casualties with 19,240 dead.
The first day of the Battle of the Somme was the worst death toll in the history of the British army and the horror of that day still resonates today.
