According to reports, Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the largest data center in Pakistan, has been compromised in a Major Cyber Attack and all tax machinery websites have been rendered unreachable.

“The FBR’s website has been temporarily unavailable due to scheduled maintenance,” the website stated when it was first opened.

A senior official said that there was a “national crisis-like situation” since Saturday at 2 am and that we might not be out by Sunday evening.

The authority issued a press release about in-progress service optimization activities at FBR House Data Center Islamabad.

FBR stated that the technical team is currently migrating the service. FBR IT Operations will see an increase in productivity after the migration is completed. The statement stated that this migration is required to upgrade the system to provide the best service to clients.

“Services are being provided to stakeholders by the data center. However, unanticipated anomalies in the migration process have caused the unavailability of services since the early morning hours. To minimize downtime, the FBR team will ensure that services are restored as quickly as possible. This activity should be complete within the next 48 hours.

It stated that FBR regretted and apologized for any inconvenience it may have caused, and appreciated the continued cooperation of all stakeholders.

Officials stated that the FBR cyber attack had affected the virtual environment at the data center.

He said that the attackers were able to exploit the weakest link in the attack on the data center's virtual machines, which was the hyper-V software from Microsoft Inc.

The Director-General of Cyber Crimes FIA noted that the exchange of information on cybercrime from country to country has recently begun and numerous countries are sharing reports of various cyber crimes including dark web and po*******hy-related crimes. The FIA’s Cybercrime Unit director also talked about actions that are needed to prevent cybercrime and the ex*****on of laws against it.

He added that social media companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter provide access to their complaint portals where the PTA registers complaints regarding various cybercrimes. However, their response rate is only 34%, which mostly includes responses to child po*******hy.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority has claimed that WhatsApp was used by the Israeli surveillance company NSO Group that played a pivotal role in the Pegasus scandal. According to the reports of foreign news agencies, the investigation report issued by 17 media houses said that the mobile number used by Imran Khan at least once was in the directory of Indian NSO clients. However, Pakistan Army took immediate action after being informed about the espionage and imposed restrictions on the targeted smartphones.

Given the seriousness of these reports, Pakistan has also called on the pertinent UN bodies to completely investigate the matter, bring the facts to light and hold the Indian perpetrators accountable.

The electric car maker is breaking new ground yet again, this time by offering a subscription to unlock its "Full Self-Driving" feature. According to Tesla's website, for a monthly fee of $199 customers can access the not-fully autonomous capabilities of their electric automobiles.

"With Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, you will get access to a suite of more advanced driver assistance features, designed to provide more active guidance and assisted driving under your active supervision," explains the company.

Tesla's FSD, which earlier in July received an update to Version 9.0 that's still in Beta, requires users to actively supervise driving and be ready to take back control in the blink of an eye.

Military-grade spyware licensed by an Israeli firm to governments for tracking terrorists and criminals was used in attempted and successful hacks of 37 smartphones belonging to journalists, human rights activists, business executives, and two women close to murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to an investigation. The phones appeared on a list of more than 50,000 numbers that are concentrated in countries known to engage in surveillance of their citizens and also known to have been clients of the Israeli firm, NSO Group, a worldwide leader in the growing and largely unregulated private spyware industry, the investigation found.

The list does not identify who put the numbers on it, or why, and it is unknown how many of the phones were targeted or surveilled. But forensic analysis of the 37 smartphones shows that many display a tight correlation between time stamps associated with a number on the list and the initiation of surveillance, in some cases as brief as a few seconds. Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based journalism nonprofit, and Amnesty International, a human rights group, had access to the list and shared it with the news organizations, which did further research and analysis. Amnesty’s Security Lab did the forensic analyses on the smartphones. The numbers on the list are unattributed, but reporters were able to identify more than 1,000 people spanning more than 50 countries through research and interviews on four continents: several Arab royal family members, at least 65 business executives, 85 human rights activists, 189 journalists, and more than 600 politicians and government officials — including cabinet ministers, diplomats, and military and security officers. The numbers of several heads of state and prime ministers also appeared on the list.

Market analyst firm Canalys has released its preliminary report on the global smartphone market. As per the latest data, Samsung has retained its 1st position in the second quarter of 2021. However, the most interesting bit from this report is that the Chinese brand Xiaomi has surpassed Apple to become the world's 2nd biggest smartphone maker in terms of volumes.

The smartphone market, as a whole, shows a sign of recovery with 12 percent growth in Q2 2021. Samsung held onto its crown with a 19 percent market share. Xiaomi came in a close second with a 17 percent share owing to its whopping 83 percent growth. Apple slid down to the third spot with a 14 percent share and just one percent growth. The fourth and fifth positions were taken by BBK electronic's subsidiaries Oppo and Vivo with 10 percent share each. If you consider these companies as a single entity, BBK electronics claims the third position pushing Apple further down to a fourth spot.

It is worth noting that Xiaomi's inventory mostly belongs to the budget segment. Compared to Apple, Xiaomi's average selling price is around 75 percent cheaper. To boost its revenue, the Chinese brand will require its premium offerings such as the Mi 11 Ultra to fire along with its budget line-up. According to Canalys, Xiaomi's major sales boost came from Latin America, Africa, and Western Europe. Xiaomi's rapid growth can be attributed to Huawei's struggle caused by the US sanctions.

A study presented at the International Conference on Fiber Optic Communication in June has revealed that Japanese engineers recently broke the world record for the highest internet speed, achieving a data transfer speed of 319 terabits per second (Tb/s). The new record was set on a fiber cable that stretched over 3,000 kilometers, and it appears to be compatible with the current cable infrastructure.

The transmission speed is nearly twice as fast as the previous record of 178 Tb/s, which was set less than a year ago and seven times faster than the previous record of 44.2 Tb/s set by an experimental photonic chip.

The American space agency NASA itself uses a pretty basic speed of 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s). However, the new record rises high above the current speed available to the customers—in regions of Japan, New Zealand, and the United States, the fastest home internet connections reach 10 Gb/s.

This new achievement was made possible by combining existing fiber optic infrastructure with more advanced technologies. Instead of the traditional standard core, the research team used four "cores," which are glass tubes placed in the fibers that transmit data. Using a technique called wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), the signals are then separated into numerous wavelengths and broadcast at the same time. To carry more data, a rarely used third "band" is added, and the distance is increased using various optical amplification technologies.

Eyeing an even bigger slice of the media pie, Netflix is planning an imminent expansion into the video game space and has reportedly tapped a former Electronic Arts and Facebook executive to helm the initiative.

On Wednesday, Netflix had selected Mike Verdu — most recently vice president of augmented reality and virtual reality content at Facebook — to serve as vice president of game development. Once installed at the platform, Verdu will report to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters.

The announcement represents just the latest push by Netflix into a space beyond streaming content like television shows and movies — a realm that the platform has signaled to its 200 million subscribers for years that it was eager to delve into. Netflix first hinted at a potential market expansion during the E3 gaming conference in 2019, when it announced a planned mobile game based on the “Stranger Things” franchise.

Since then, Netflix has been less than coy about its proposed expansion: In a 2019 letter to shareholders, the company named — Fortnite — a popular video game known that has something to do with dancing if I’m not mistaken — as its primary competition. And in May of 2021, The Information first reported that Netflix was seeking an executive to boost its investments in the gaming space. It’s also not the first time Netflix has sought to blur the line between traditional streaming content and more avant-garde media, including recent interactive features like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Carmen Sandiego.

The hacking crew behind damaging attacks on meat supplier JBS and customers of tech provider Kaseya has disappeared from the internet.

The so-called REvil group’s dark website dubbed the “Happy Blog,” has been down since early this morning. Repeated attempts to access the page today have failed with a notice saying: “The most likely cause is that the onion site is offline.” REvil’s other pages, including its ransom payment page, are also currently inaccessible, and its representatives have been quiet on hacking forums since late last week, according to numerous cybersecurity researchers.

There’s no information as to why REvil, believed to be operating out of Russia, may have disappeared. It could be due to law enforcement action, though no agency has yet claimed success in taking the group down. (The FBI declined to comment.) Last month, President Biden and Russian leader Vladimir Putin discussed cybersecurity issues, including the potential for the Kremlin to be more supportive of efforts to counter cybercriminals launching devastating attacks on U.S. businesses.

Apple is teaming up with Goldman Sachs to launch its own "buy now, pay later" service, according to a report published Tuesday.

"Apple Pay Later" will be available on Apple devices via the Wallet app, allowing customers to buy products and split the payment over multiple months, people with knowledge of the matter told. They did not say when it was expected to launch.

The service, which will rival the likes of Affirm and Klarna, will be available to use in retail stores or when buying online.

Users will be able to choose from two options when paying through Apple Pay Later.

The first option, "Apple Pay in 4," is four interest-free payments, made every two weeks.

The second is "Apple Pay Monthly Installments," which splits payments over several months, with interest, the source added.

The people didn't reveal how much interest Apple plans to charge on the monthly installments option.

Users will have to apply via Apple's Wallet app if they want to use Apple Pay Later, those familiar with the matter.

Enough doses have now been administered to fully vaccinate 22.6% of the global population—but the distribution has been lopsided. Countries and regions with the highest incomes are getting vaccinated more than 30 times faster than those with the lowest.

While the best vaccines are thought to be 95% effective, it takes a coordinated campaign to stop a pandemic. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease official in the U.S., has said that vaccinating 70% to 85% of the U.S. population would enable a return to normalcy.

On a global scale, that’s a daunting level of vaccination. At the current pace of 29.6 million a day, it would take another year to achieve a high level of global immunity. The rate, however, is steadily increasing, and new vaccines by additional manufacturers are coming to market.

Israel was the first to show that vaccinations were having a nationwide effect. The country has led the world in vaccinations, and by February more than 84% of people ages 70 and older had received two doses. Severe covid cases and deaths declined rapidly. A separate analysis in the U.K. showed similar results.

It’s now a life-and-death contest between vaccine and virus. New strains threaten renewed outbreaks. In the early stages of a campaign, the effect of vaccinations is often outweighed by other factors of transmissibility: virus mutations, seasonality, the effectiveness of mask use, and social distancing. In time, higher vaccination rates should limit the Covid-19 burden around the world.
