Mario + Rabbids was a crossover genre flip for the popular Super Mario franchise that was successful to the tune of 10 million sales. If it can take a squad-based strategy spin and make it work, what other popular franchises could do the same??

Mil-sim squad sandbox Doorkickers 2: Task Force North just dropped a HUGE update - including TWO new mission packs! One is a group of updated fan favorite missions from the original game, as well as more weapons and armor available to use.

I was able to play two great strategy game demos at PAX West: Disgaea 7 Complete and R Type Tactics Cosmos!

Disgaea 7 complete is a return to form for the classic strategy RPG series, and as a more casual player I really enjoyed it. The Bushido/samurai theme is a nice twist on the Netherworld, and it has the same deceptively deep turn-based tactical combat and endless replayability built in. The complete edition continues the Disgaea tradition of adding in more characters , modes, and strategic depth - Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 exclusively in October, but hopefully we see a broader release later down the road.

Second is R-Type Tactics Cosmos, a sci-fi strategy game that seems to have a bit of a cult following from it's original release on the PSP. I never played that version, but the updated and repackaged version is coming to all platforms in 2026, and sci-fi customizable starship combat is always a yes from me.

Was pleasantly surprised when I checked out SPACE SCUM - a sci-fi strategy RPG with heavy Battle Brothers influence. Turn based tactics combat mixed with some open world style exploration and hardcore resource management makes this one stand out!

The MENACE developers have confirmed we will be getting some updates at Gamescom this week! (August 20th-24th). I expect an updated release date/timeframe, a new trailer or gameplay footage, and possibly some news about the demo they have been working on 🤞🤞

MENACE is one of the most anticipated turn based strategy games of this year - coming from the developers of Battle Brothers and bringing combined arms combat mixed with turn-based tactics to an original sci-fi universe. This is one upcoming game and showcase strategy fans don't want to miss.

Starvaders is a unique, modern spin on the retro classic Space Invaders - blending an arcade vibe with turn-based grid combat and roguelike progression. Roguelike deckbuilders are not usually my favorite type of game, but this one REALLY stands out and could be a hidden gem!
