Dive into a forgotten chapter of Ancient Chinese history – the Great Qiang Rebellion (AD 107–118). This video uncovers the brutal and protracted uprising that shook the mighty Han Dynasty to its core, revealing a period of imperial decline and fierce frontier resistance.

In AD 107, as corruption festered in the Han court and its grip weakened, the Qiang tribes of the western frontier, burdened by heavy taxes and military abuse, finally rose up. Led by figures like Dianlian, these proud semi-nomadic herders fought not just for land, but for dignity and autonomy against an empire struggling to maintain control.

Witness the early chaos of the rebellion, the Han's initial military failures under commanders like Deng Zhi, and the strategic shifts that ultimately turned the tide. From the Qiang's desperate early battles with makeshift weapons to the Han's innovative use of light cavalry and targeted assassinations (like those of Du Qi, Du Jigong, and Lianchang), discover the tactics and betrayals that defined this decade-long conflict.

Explore the turning points, including the deaths of key rebel leaders and the strategic campaigns led by Han generals like Ren Shang and Ma Xian. While the Han eventually reasserted control, the Great Qiang Rebellion exposed the empire's military weaknesses, drained its treasury (over 24 billion cash!), and left vast areas desolate.

This is more than just a military history; it's a profound story of survival, resistance, and betrayal on the edge of a crumbling empire. Understand the lasting impact on the Han Dynasty and the enduring spirit of the Qiang people.

Legio I Adiutrix was born in chaos—raised by Emperor Nero in AD 68 from the ranks of Roman marines. This elite legion first emerged during the Year of the Four Emperors, when Galba initially refused to grant them a standard. But just before his death, he awarded them the eagle, securing their status as a true Roman legion. They fought for Otho at the First Battle of Bedriacum, were defeated, and later pledged loyalty to Vespasian—emerging on the winning side of Rome’s brutal civil war.

From crushing the Batavian Revolt to clashing with the Chatti under Domitian, from the bloody Dacian Wars under Trajan to campaigns in Parthia with Lucius Verus, the Adiutrix carved its legacy across the empire’s frontiers. At the Battle of Tapae and during the Marcomannic Wars, they proved again and again why they earned the title Pia Fidelis—“Loyal and Faithful.”

This documentary covers the full history of Legio I Adiutrix—from its creation in Nero’s reign to its later service during the Reign of the Five Emperors. Discover the battles, the emperors, and the enduring loyalty of one of Rome’s most battle-hardened legions.
