The Sudanese Armed Forces have successfully recaptured Wad Madani, the capital of El Gezira state, from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

This strategic city had been under RSF control since December 2023. The army’s victory is seen as a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 and has displaced over 12 million people, with half the population facing hunger.

The recapture of Wad Madani is expected to boost the army’s morale and could lead to intensified efforts to reclaim other regions, including Khartoum.
