UNIPORT Senate Elects New Deputy Vice Chancellors

THE Senate of the University of Port Harcourt has elected three new Deputy Vice Chancellors to assist the Vice Chancellor in the administration of the University. This development comes as the tenure of the current Deputy Vice Chancellors draws to a close, necessitating the election of new officers to ensure continuity in leadership and effective governance within the University.

The election occurred during the 488th Senate Meeting held at the CBN Centre of Excellence Auditorium on August 6, 2025.

After a free and transparent voting process, the Senate elected the following individuals to serve as Deputy Vice Chancellors:

Professor Chukwudi Onyeaso was elected as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration. Professor Rosemary Ogu was elected as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics. Professor Angela Frank-Briggs was elected as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Research and Development.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Owunari Georgewill, congratulated the newly elected Deputy Vice Chancellors and urged them to remain diligent and committed to the growth of the University. He also commended the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellors for their excellent service and contributions during their tenure.

The newly elected Deputy Vice Chancellors are expected to bring fresh perspectives and continue the drive toward academic excellence, administrative efficiency, and research advancement at the University of Port Harcourt.

Uniport Celebrates 35th Convocation, Honours 14,861 Graduands Across Academic Levels

The University of Port Harcourt held the first day of its 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony at the New Convocation Arena, where graduands from the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic sessions are being honoured on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The event began at exactly 10:00 a.m. and attracted members of the university management, academic and non-academic staff, students, families, and guests who gathered to witness the celebration of academic achievement.

A total of 14,861 graduands featured in this year’s convocation ceremony, which spanned two days. However, today’s ceremony was strictly for the conferment of First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Master’s Degrees.

Out of the total figure, 9,788 graduands receive First Degrees, and among them, 363 earn First Class Honours. In addition, 2,008 are awarded Postgraduate Diplomas, while 2,131 received Master’s Degrees.

This convocation ceremony also coincided with the fourth anniversary of Professor Owunari Georgewill’s tenure as the ninth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt. His administration continued to prioritise academic excellence, institutional growth, and student success.

The convocation continues on Saturday with the conferment of Doctor of Philosophy degrees and Honorary Degrees, as the university concludes its official celebration of academic distinction and legacy.

Golden Jubilee kicks off in style as Uniport begins 50th anniversary, 35th convocation celebrations.

THE University of Port Harcourt has officially commenced activities marking its 50th Anniversary and 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony Yesterday, 21st June 2025, with a vibrant display of unity, culture, and academic pride.

The week-long celebration began with a campus-wide rally, which saw members of the university community management, staff, students, and stakeholders adorned in colourful, customised T-shirts and face caps. The rally was followed by a press briefing that outlined the significance of the dual celebrations.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, described the opening day as victorious and carnival-like, reflecting the enthusiasm of the university’s stakeholders as they celebrated five decades of academic excellence.

In a separate event held at the CBN Centre of Excellence Auditorium, a documentary film chronicling the journey of the University from its inception in 1975 to its present status as a world-class institution was screened to a packed audience. The film traced the humble beginnings and progressive milestones of the institution.

Thereafter, visitors were taken through a scientific exhibition showcasing the research strides of the university’s various faculties, centres, and the College of Health Sciences. The exhibition continued at the university library, with pictorial displays highlighting Uniport's history from 1975 to 2025.

Day One of the celebration concluded on a successful note, with a large turnout recorded at both the documentary screening and the exhibitions.

The University of Port Harcourt continues to mark its golden jubilee with pride, reaffirming its commitment to education, innovation, and community.

*UNIPORT to Begin 31st Certificate Verification June 16*

The University of Port Harcourt will commence its 31st Certificate Verification Exercise from June 16 to August 7, 2025, according to a memo signed by Prof. L. O. Odokuma, Chairman of the Certificate Verification Committee dated 27th May 2025.

The exercise is for U2021 Part-Time, U2023 Full-Time, and other students who missed previous rounds. Students must present original copies of required documents, including WAEC/NECO/NABTEB certificates, JAMB result slips, and admission letters. Photocopies and statements of results/Certificate will not be accepted.

Details of venues and dates are in the attached schedule which has been dispersed to college and faculty heads. Students are urged to comply strictly.

SUG UNIPORT Launches First-Ever Year One Package Distribution

On May 28th, 2025, the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt, led by Rt. Hon. Harmony Lawrence, launched the first-ever distribution of Year One Packages to new students. A historic move aimed at promoting student welfare.

According to the SUG President, the initiative is part of a broader welfare agenda, which has already seen improvements like hostel foam replacements and the provision of waste disposal points on campus. He emphasized that this gesture is meant to welcome freshers and ease their integration into university life.

Present at the event were the SUG General Secretary, Comr. Okoli Victor, and the Director of Information, Comr. Edeh David, who joined the President in distributing the packages to excited freshers.

“This is just the beginning, we plan to do even more for the student community,” Said the President.

*UNIPORT Replaces Old Foams in Hostels, Students Excited*

The University of Port Harcourt has begun replacing old, worn-out foams in student hostels with brand new ones.

According to the management, the upgrade is part of efforts to make hostel life more comfortable. The replacement will happen gradually until all hostels are covered. The new foams are thicker, more durable, and provide better sleep comfort.

Juliet , a 300-level student from the NDDC hostel, expressed her joy. _“The old foam used to give me back pain. This new one is way better. I’m really happy the school is doing something like this,”_ she said.

Students have welcomed the move, while the university thanked the Pro-Chancellor, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, and the Governing Council for prioritizing student welfare.

*UNIPORT Among Six Nigerian Universities to Receive Advanced Engineering Equipment*

In a notable boost to research and development, the University of Port Harcourt has been selected as one of only six universities in Nigeria to receive state-of-the-art engineering research equipment from the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) under the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The equipment is expected to strengthen academic research and practical learning in the Faculty of Engineering.

The University Management expressed deep appreciation to Professor Sampson Duna, Director General of the Institute, for the generous gesture. They assured the equipment will be put to effective use and properly maintained to achieve the purpose of the donation.

Impact of Earpods and Headsets on Our Hearing: A Wake-Up Call for Students and Young Adults

As the world marks World Hearing Day today, March 3rd, health experts are raising concerns about the increasing use of earpods and headsets among students and young adults. While these devices have become an essential part of daily life, studies show that excessive and improper use could lead to long-term hearing problems.

Many young people rely on earpods for music, gaming, online classes, and social interactions, often without realising the risks involved. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to loud sounds can damage delicate hair cells in the inner ear, leading to Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL), a condition that can be permanent.
Unlike other body cells, once these tiny hair-like structures are destroyed, they do not regenerate.

“Hearing loss is often gradual, so most people don’t realize the damage until it becomes severe,” said Dr. Thelma, an audiologist. “Many students increase the volume of their devices in noisy environments, not knowing that they are pushing their ears beyond safe limits.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the safe listening level is below 85 decibels (dB) for a maximum of eight hours per day. However, modern headsets can reach up to 100 dB or more, exposing users to dangerous levels of sound, especially when used for long periods.

There is a growing concern among students.
With online learning, many students now wear headsets for extended hours while studying. Others use them for gaming and entertainment, sometimes at dangerously high volumes. The tendency to raise the volume in noisy surroundings, such as public transport or school hostels, increases the risk of hearing loss.

Research shows that symptoms such as ringing in the ears (tinnitus), ear pain, and difficulty hearing conversations in noisy environments could be early signs of hearing damage. If ignored, these symptoms can progress to partial or

11,868 UNIPORT Students Swears Matriculation Oath

- Stay Focused, Be Committed To Learning - Says UNIPORT VC

As crowd of 11,868 matriculating new students dressed in colorful attires were seated in the new convocation arena to pledge their oath and mark the 46th matriculating ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT was heavily crowded that movement to and fro was slow with presence of security and traffic warden.

Speaking to the students, the University of Port Harcourt, Vice-Chancellor Professor Owunari Georgewill, urged the newly admitted students to stay focused, live with purpose, gain knowledge, and develop their skills.

According to the VC, the University has earned it reputation of academic excellence owing to the institution achievements in research and entrepreneurship.

While also highlighting the institution's achievements and opportunities, he advised the students to stay committed to their studies, noting that UNIPORT has produced outstanding individuals who have made an impact both in Nigeria and globally including the notable former President of Nigeria, Dr. Ebele Goodluck.

"I encourage you all to stay focused and live purposefully. You are here at the prestigious University of Port Harcourt to learn, grow, and build your skills," he said.

Describing UNIPORT as one of Nigeria’s top universities, with excellent faculties and colleges, consistently ranked among the country's top ten institutions, the VC maintained that students need to be responsible members of the university community and uphold its values of integrity.

Speaking further during the matriculation ceremony, the VC told the matriculating students to shun bad practices.

UCJ UNIPORT Executives Pay Courtesy Visit To Student Affairs Dean

The 4th Executive Council of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Port Harcourt (UCJ UNIPORT) Chapter, on Thursday paid a working visit to the institution Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Chima Nwokocha.

This courtesy visit is part of the current leadership’s effort to seek the continuous support of the University stakeholders and alumni of the union in promoting the ideals of responsible journalism.

Speaking to the Executives, the Dean charged the union’s new Executives to continue to prioritize evidence-based reporting like their predecessors.

Appreciating the University Management for the support over the years, Vice President Administration, Ibarakunye Peace, also celebrated the Dean who his role in ensuring freedom of the Press on campus.

Reacting, the Dean who expressed disappointment in the activities of past administration for not reporting, said the University environment is the best place to nurture good writers and future journalists.

He however encouraged the union to write better stories that reflects the essence of Campus Journalism and to always be the voice of the unheard.

“The university as a conducive environment for practicing student journalism, there are stories everywhere, the students need to know more about what is going on in the school.” he added.

The Union of Campus Journalists, UCJ UNIPORT, is an independent student media in the University of Port Harcourt, established to foster effective communication between students and the Management.

Also, the union assured improvement in the shortcomings of the past administration.

The visit ended with a group photograph with the Dean and Vice President Administration, Ibarakunye Peace Francis alongside the Secretary General, Nze Divine Ijeoma, the Public Relations Officer, Kubiat Bassey and the Ex- Officio member, Ebenezer Paul.
