Seventy-five years ago, in June 1950, 22-year-old Lt. Charles Avarello was the first of Buffalo's 151 to die in the Korean War. This pilot of a B-29 bomber grew up in a flat at 272 West Tupper Street and attended P.S. 76 and Burgard Vocational High School. All his short life, Avarello dreamed of becoming a pilot.

Ninety years ago, Eberhard von Nasse was the N**i agent founding Buffalo's chapter of the Friends of the New Germany, later to become the German-American Bund. He lived in a boarding house at Delaware Avenue and Edward Street and worked for a German steamship line.

Eighty years ago this April, two months before D-Day, Buffalo was a hub of military production. With so many drafted, local war planners were short 26,000 workers to fully staff factories making airplanes, artillery shells and land mines. Everybody was working a 48-hour (or more) week. -Day
