Kendrick Lamar sounds just like Drakeo The Ruler and needs to “keep it real,” according to Drakeo’s father.
Daryl Wayne Caldwell Sr., Drakeo’s dad, sat down with Adam22 in an interview for No Jumper on Aug. 24, and discussed the similarities between his son’s voice and what he’s heard from K-Dot.
“I’m not a big Kendrick Lamar person, listening to his music,” Caldwell Sr. says. “Yeah. I’m really picky with music, you know, just being that I’m a musician and all that, but I heard this one song… I’m like, wait. I didn’t know if I was listening to a Draco song that I just didn’t hear yet… No, that’s not Draco. That’s Kendrick Lamar… He sounds just like… And that’s when I knew right there. This guy, he sounds, the rhyme pattern, the syncopation, all of that was the same. The flow, everything was the same.”
Drakeo’s father went on to say that Kendrick Lamar probably never gave Drakeo props due to politics, citing the possibility that K-Dot wanted to keep a “positive movement” going. Despite that, Caldwell Sr. says Kendrick needs to “keep it real” about using Drakeo’s flow.
“Now, far as him giving him the props, maybe it was a politic thing,” Caldwell Sr. adds. “Maybe it was politics, you know what I’m saying? ‘I can’t be going on that bandwagon right now with what I’m tryna do. I’m trying to make this positive movement, you know, right now with, you know, these rappers and this rap stuff. And if I, you know, shout-out Draco, you know, and just let people know I’m using this flow, that might be bad for what I’m tryna do.’ So, I can understand it on that level, but at some point, he got to keep it real.”
Kendrick Lamar gave props to many rising rappers by featuring them on his latest album, GNX, including Az Chike, Lefty Gunplay and Dody6.
Drakeo The Ruler was killed in 2021, after being stabbed backstage at the Once Upon a Time music festival at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.
