ARCHBISHOP PHIRI RECEIVES PALLIUM FROM POPE

Ndola Archbishop Dr. Benjamin Phiri this morning received his Pallium from Pope Francis in Rome during Mass on the Solemnity of the Saints Peter and Paul.

The pallia is a vestment in the Catholic Church which symbolizes an archbishop's unity with the pope and his authority and responsibility to take care of the flock entrusted to him.

Pope Francis blessed the Pallia during Mass before giving them to Archbishop Phiri and other new Metropolitan Archbishops appointed in the last one year.

Meanwhile, a celebration of the Investiture with Pallium on Archbishop Phiri and the Thanksgiving Mass is expected to take place on 31st August 2024 at Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola.

HAPPY FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.

This solemnity celebrates Mary as the virgin who is “full of grace,” as the archangel Gabriel said at the annunciation. From earliest times the Church expressed and developed the belief that Mary was conceived without original sin, but it was only in 1854 that Pope Pius IX proclaimed it a dogma. We give thanks to God for having chosen the Blessed Virgin Mary as the mother of the Lord, and our mother, and having preserved her from sin.

Theme of the Feast: Mary Is the Sign of Victory over the Serpent. Mary is only a creature; she is and has nothing herself. All she is, she is by the power of the Almighty “and holy is his name” (Lk1:49). This is why the Gospel passage describes her as “favoured one,” full of grace, the same fullness of grace that God is ready to grant to each one of us.

SAINT ANDREW, Apostle (Feast)

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was from Bethsaida and was a disciple of John the Baptist before coming to know the Lord, to whom he also brought his brother Peter. With Philip he presented the Gentiles to Jesus and, before the miracle in the desert, it was Andrew who pointed out to the Lord the boy carrying the loaves and the fish. According to an ancient tradition, Andrew preached the Gospel in various places until, eventually he suffered death on an X-shaped cross in Greece.

As Christian tradition says , Andrew went on to preach the Good News around the shores of the Black Sea and throughout what is now Greece and Turkey. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion in Patras. He was bound, rather than nailed, to a cross, as is described in the Acts of Andrew. He was crucified on a cross form known as "crux decussata," which is an X-shaped cross or a "saltire." Today this is commonly referred to as "St. Andrew's Cross." It is believed Andrew requested to be crucified this way, because he deemed himself "unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus.

TODAY'S REFLECTION

Jesus speaks of his own betrayal in a veiled manner. The context is the last supper during which Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, demonstrating the “he came not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many”. To be a disciple of Jesus means to be a servant like the master, to reach out to people in love, compassion and kindness. To be a disciple means to be ready for betrayal, rejection, persecution and even death. He empowers us in our weakness, he accompanies us in our loneliness, he welcomes us in our moments of rejection, and he fills us with his joy in our sadness. Lord, and master, we thank you for knowing our weakness and carrying our sufferings.
