Grant ponders team selection for Morocco clash

By Oliver Chisenga

CHIPOLOPOLO coach Avram Grant says the return of several players from injury has brought healthy competition in his squad ahead of tomorrow’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Morocco.

Addressing a pre-match press conference, Grant said Morocco, who have already qualified to next year's tournament, would be tough but his side would be equal to the task.

“The last qualification we won without the players we consider key players and now they have come back. So it is a good competition of who will play and who will not, who will also be on the bench and who will not,” he said.

“So this is good for Zambia. I do believe it is bad luck with the results that have been coming because we did a lot of work, the basics and the team is looking good and strong.”

Grant congratulated Morocco for securing their berth to the World Cup after beating Niger 5-0 on Friday.

“Morocco is a very good team. We congratulate Morocco for qualifying to the World Cup. Moreover, in Qatar they came out in the semifinal, they played fantastic. They have a very good team, we saw in the reverse game against us,” he said.

“We know that Morocco is a very good team but we are also a good team and we want to show it tomorrow. It is a very tough game.”

Grant said his team would still aim for one of the four best second placed slots to compete for a play-off position.

“We have three games in a row to seal second place. It is a team that never gives up,” said Grant.

Zambia hosts Morocco at 15h00 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

MMD Backs Hichilema for 2026, Will Not Field Presidential Candidate

By Patricia Banda

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) has announced that it will not contest the presidency in the 2026 General Election, but will instead support the candidature of President Hakainde Hichilema.

MMD President Dr. Nevers Mumba stated that this decision aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the MMD and United Party for National Development (UPND) in 2024, in which both parties committed to shared goals of unity and economic development.

Dr. Mumba emphasized that the MMD is part of an alliance with the UPND, similar to other political parties.

Speaking during the Lusaka Province MMD Convention held today, Dr. Mumba clarified that the party will only contest parliamentary, councillor, and other local positions, but not the presidency.

He dismissed calls for him to criticize President Hichilema’s policies, asserting that the UPND is actively rebuilding Zambia’s economy, which he claimed was severely damaged during the 10 years of PF rule.

Dr. Mumba also announced that the MMD will soon hold a National Convention to renew its mandate and vision for the benefit of all its members.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mumba urged investigative wings to trace every dollar unaccounted for in the $11 million corruption case involving former Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji.

He advised the Patriotic Front (PF) not to claim victimization by the UPND, stating that court convictions have been based on evidence.
