Late summer is slowly transitioning into autumn in Switzerland. Grateful for the amazing long sunny days we have had, and reminding myself hiking season is not over yet. ♥️

Two weeks ago, we decided to explore a place not far from Lucerne: Maria-Rickenbach! This pilgrimage destination (the village has a well-known monastery) offers amazing nature without the crowds. We did a 3 hour hike that started in Maria-Rickenbach and took us all the way to Klewenalp and lake Lucerne.

Maria Rickenbach - Musenalp - Klewenalp 🏔️

🚂 Take the train from Luzern to Niederrickenbach, about 20 minutes.
🚠 The cable car station is directly next to the station and takes you up to Maria-Rickenbach village - CHF 13.20 one way (half fare CHF 6.60)
When arriving at Maria-Rickenbach, have a look in the quaint village and have a coffee before setting off to Musenalp! ⛰️ The route to Musenalp takes about 80 minutes and includes steep parts, with about 700 meters elevation gain. If you don’t want to hike, you can also take the small Musenalp cable car that starts right next to the Maria-Rickenbach cable car.
⛰️🧀🐄 Arrived at Musenalp, indulge in a lunch at the Alpbeizli Musenalp!
From the Musenalp top, descend in front of the restaurant and follow signs for Klewenalp. The Swisstopo app can be a great help too! 📱
The route is mostly downhill, no heavy hiking anymore.
🚠 Arriving at Klewenalp, take in the beautiful views over lake Lucerne and beyond before descending with the cable car to Beckenried (CHF 25 single way, half fare CHF 12.50)
⛴️ My favorite way of getting back to Luzern from Beckenried is a lake cruise, but you can also opt for the bus and train back to town.

A perfect hiking day with beautiful mountain panoramas without loads or tourists!

Just on our way back from an extended weekend trip to Andermatt. If you want mountain vibes while pampering yourself, would highly recommend the Chedi Andermatt. Prices start generally at CHF 900 per night, but the hotel is massive, central and has everything you can think of. Great restaurants, pools, spa and spacious rooms. The hotel has over 200 (!) fireplaces.
They have the occasional deal when room prices are a bit lower.

The weather in Switzerland is amazing and many parts of the country have the Friday off as it’s the Assumption of Mary today.
If you don’t have plans yet, consider exploring the magical Meggenhorn Schloss close to Luzern. Lovely castle grounds, vineyards and swimming spots! You can reach it by boat from Luzern within 20 minutes!

33 degrees celsius in Luzern today, perfect for a swim. If you hop on bus 21 direction Kriens Busschleiffe and get off at Kastanienbaum - Krämerstein, you have this beautiful swimming spot almost all to yourself 😍

For everyone visiting Switzerland in the coming week, the heat wave is returning in full force with temperatures of 32 degrees celsius or more (90F)

Drink enough water, don’t overestimate yourself doing straineous hikes and stay out of the sun where possible. Go swimming, but be cautious. After much rain in past two weeks, many rivers and lakes are still on high water levels!
Ps. No, air conditioning is still not a given in many hotels. Keep your windows (and curtains) closed during the day to keep the heat out!

Chances are that despite researching many destinations to visit in Switzerland, you have never heard of Grimentz. This rustic charming village sits high in the Val d’Anniviers region in canton Valais/Wallis and is perfect to visit summer and winter.
In the winter, it becomes a popular ski destination, where in summer it is amazing for tranquile hiking within overrun trails.

📍Grimentz, Val d’Anniviers, Switzerland.
🚂🚌 How to get there: get a train to Sierre and then take the postauto to Vissoie. On the little town square of Vissoie, there is another bus taking you to Grimentz. From Sierre, the entire will be around 60 minutes.
🌲⛰️What to do there: take a few days to explore the entire valley with villages such as Zinal, Chandolin, St Luc and surrounding mountain peaks. Great for hiking of all ages. In Grimentz, you can take a cable car entirely made of glass, including the floor!

Val d’Anniviers - Valais , Switzerland🇨🇭🏔️
A few days ago we arrived in canton Valais for our summer holiday, where our chalet is overlooking the valley and the pointe de Tsirouc mountain peaks. The little village of Vissoie is the starting point for many Postauto busses further into the Anniviers valley with villages like Chandolin, Zinal and the beautiful Grimentz.

If you want to experience wilderness not overrun by tourists, the Anniviers valley is a perfect destination!

🏔️ The untouched valley of Derborence - Valais 🇨🇭🏔️

As the 2025 summer holidays are about to start, I wanted to look back and recommend you our 2024 summer holiday destination!
Last year, we spent a week in what can only be described as wilderness paradise: the Derborence valley in the canton of Valais. 🏔️⛰️🌲

We had a small forest chalet next to two breathtaking small lakes as our base, with mountains towering around us in every direction.
This place was great for disconnecting. Despite it only being about an hour from Sion with the Postauto busses, it felt like we were almost alone here!

Explore the Lac de Derborence with its stunning beauty, explore the forests on the lower part of the valley or hike high atop the Godey barrage lake.

📍Where: Derborence Valley, Aven, Valais.
🗓️When: Only reachable during the summer months, completely closed in winter.
🚗🚌How to get there: About an hour with the car or Postauto route 331 from Sion to Aven/derborence. This is considered the most dangerous and most spectacular Postauto route in the country, you need some nerves of steel!

🤷⛰️What to do there: Disconnect, go hiking and enjoy an area in Switzerland almost unspoiled. 🇨🇭
