On this day 5 years ago a highly unexpected and extremely intense derecho ripped through the Midwest producing estimated max wind speeds of 140 mph in parts of Eastern Iowa.

Incredibly, models performed so poorly that much of the area where 100 mph wind gusts would later occur began the day under just a general thunderstorm risk.

In total, during its nearly 14 hours duration, this storm killed 4 people, devastated the farming industry, and caused $11.2 billion in damages (the costliest for a thunderstorm event).

There's a 70% chance of thunderstorms forming after midnight tonight in addition to a slight risk for severe weather and a moderate risk for flash flooding.

Beginning about an hour or 2 after sunset the lower-level jet will "kick-in" and cause numerous widespread potentially severe-storms to form in the SW IA/SE NE vicinity. These storms will have the potential to cause damaging winds, hail, and even a tornado.

As these storms continue to form throughout the early nighttime hours they will continue to conceal and become a line that could continually train rainfall throughout parts of southern Iowa. Rainfall totals of 1-3" will be likely once the storms begin to train.

The WPC has upgraded the excessive rainfall outlook to a MODERATE risk for tomorrow into Sunday.

Flash Flooding will be likely for many of the same areas that were hit hard by the rain yesterday starting tomorrow afternoon. Another 5+" of rain looks possible.

Please start taking precautions, creeks, streams, lakes, ponds, and low-lying areas are at the highest risk of flooding.

Growing more and more concerned about a more flooding risk for the region on Saturday night into Sunday.

Multiple rounds of heavy rain could be possible on Saturday with the main threat incoming late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

Much of the region is still highly saturated from yesterday so it will not take much rain to cause potentially major issues in streams, ponds, lakes, and rivers.

As a result of this threat, the WPC has already issued a slight risk for flooding across the region for Saturday and Sunday.
