Only 1% of fatal drownings occur in lifeguard-supervised settings.

If you can’t see the lifeguards, they likely can’t see you. If you’re planning a day at the water, the safest place to swim is where the lifeguards are.

Emergency Services respond to drowning at Moonlight Beach

Shortly after 5:20 p.m. on July 19, 2025, officers were dispatched to a drowning incident at Moonlight Beach.

Upon arrival, officers met with Greater Sudbury Fire Services who were on scene. GSFS Water Rescue had responded to the incident and pulled two individuals from the water. One individual, a 27-year-old, man was alert and conscious upon reaching shore, however, the second individual, a 24-year-old, man was unconscious and without vital signs.

Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services began life saving measures on the 24-year-old, man once he reached the shore. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased on scene. The second individual, the 27-year-old, man was transported to hospital by paramedics and remains in stable condition.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends and those impacted by this tragedy. His name will not be released out of respect for his family’s wishes.

Based on the investigation, it is believed that the two individuals were using an inflatable kayak when the craft capsized. Additional parties on scene attempted to assist the individuals and contacted emergency responders.

We would like to commend Greater Sudbury Fire Services for the timely response and rescue and recovery efforts, as well as, Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services for the immediate medical assistance.

Last night, at 9:24 p.m., a Barrie Police officer was conducting a proactive patrol of a Wellington St. plaza when he observed a male who was known to him and was wanted on a number of outstanding arrest warrants.

Upon seeing the marked police vehicle, the 31-year-old-male, who is of no fixed address, ran and discarded a backpack that he was wearing. Additional police units responded to the area and within three minutes, the male was arrested without incident.

The accused was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Division. Police later learned that the discarded backpack contained a replica firearm and documents which connected the accused to a motor vehicle that had been reported stolen to the Barrie Police Service earlier in the morning.

As a result, the accused has been charged with:

Fail to Comply with Probation (3 counts)
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000,
Theft of a Motor Vehicle
Theft Under $5000
Possession of Break In Instruments
Fail to Attend Court
Trespassing at Night
Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code (6 counts)
Fraud Under $5000
Drive While Under Suspension.

He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing later today, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
