Sydney based designer Alix Higgins showed at Australian Fashion Week yesterday and the styling left many attendees asking the same question; “was that cultural appropriation?”

Alix said in an interview with Harpers Bazaar that the collection was inspired by Peter Pan, but that film is notorious for its racist depiction of Native American people.

This collection was designed by Alix, a white man, with the headdresses made by a white woman milliner.

While the collection is supposed to evoke folklore and childlike wonder, it ended up raising more questions about appropriation.

Some people ooze a palpable energy. Sunroom co-founder Michelle Battersby is one of those people.

For Missing Perspectives’ High Agency Women series, we aim to show people as deeply human. But it’s also undeniable that Michelle is one seriously impressive human.

So, how do you take the leap from working in HR at an investment bank, to one day running your own (somewhat edgy) tech company? For Michelle, the runway to starting her own business was slow, steady, and intentional.

From gaining valuable career experience at women-led startups like Bumble and Kic, to meeting her future co-founder Lucy Mort (and being blown away) and slowly gaining conviction that there was a market need for an app like Sunroom, Melbourne-based writer Hannah Cohen caught up with Michelle for a big sister-esque chat on knowing your strengths, and the power of intuition.

It takes a lot of inner confidence and a little bit of chutzpah to break the corporate career mould and carve your own path. Here, Michelle Battersby breaks down her journey from marketing at Citibank to now co-running her own founder-led business.

Ten years into business, Kic co-founder and CEO Laura Henshaw has survived the initial years of startup life.

Now, Laura is ready to evolve the business into a truly generational company – meaning Kic would join the likes of Nike, Adidas, and Lululemon – companies that have ridden out multiple flash-in-the-pan fads to become truly non-displaceable in the health and wellness market.

From guarding the “soul” of the Kic brand across the company’s various marketing campaigns and in app content, to leaning on advisors to help her and her co-founder Steph Claire Smith iron out differing communication and work styles, to the need for role clarity as the team and scale of the business grows, Laura has earned some serious wisdom in how to grow as a person alongside your company.

She’s warm, she’s impressive, she’s commercial - MP readers, if you don’t know her already, here’s Laura Henshaw.

In partnership with Blackbird.

If the name of the charity Wesnet rings a bell, then we might know why – musician Olivia Rodrigo directed a portion of her ticket sales from the Australian leg of her GUTS tour to the leading domestic violence charity.

With almost 350 eligible members across Australia, Wesnet represents a range of organisations and individuals including women’s refuges, shelters, safe houses and information/referral services. The organisation is back in the news again, this time with an innovative new partnership with Tinder.

Tinder has launched a national verification drive to enhance user safety and build trust in online dating by encouraging users to be a Verified QT. This initiative has been brought to life with Wesnet.

For decades, female comedians have been accused of not being as funny as their male counterparts. It’s as tiring as it is boring, yet we continually hear this.

And perhaps, negative commentary about the Australian version of The Office’s trailer is testament to how this view is still widely held.

“When I was younger, I absolutely had internalised misogyny," reflects lead actress Felicity Ward. "I was like, ‘Oh, I don't like when when female comics joke about dot, dot dot.'"

Alicia Vrajlal recently sat down with Ward to discuss the gendered backlash to the series' trailer - and misogynistic comments towards female comedians:

"If you don't find it funny, I’ve got some great news. You do not have to watch, isn't that wonderful?”
