More than you ever needed to know about pine cones.

Pine nuts are sought after by human and animals alike. The pine cone starts closed, and the nuts have not formed yet.

As the the pine cone prepares to open, the nuts are then developed. But not long after opening, they are usually already gone. Animals and critters like birds and squirrels are to very efficient at getting all the pine nuts.

Heating a pine cone that is close to opening is a great way to get the nuts before another critter does.
