Ministry of Human Development, Families Support and Gender Affairs Strengthens Safety and Preparedness in Care Facilities

Belmopan, October 30, 2025.

As part of its ongoing mandate to ensure the highest standards of care and safety within registered childcare and residential care facilities, the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, through the Registrar/Inspectorate Unit, conducted specialized training sessions for facility staff across the country.
Following the home invasion incident earlier this year at Marla’s House of Hope, the Ministry identified an urgent need to equip staff with the necessary skills to respond effectively to emergencies. In partnership with the Department of Human Services, the Ministry sought to provide targeted training addressing situational awareness and site security.
A team of ten professionals from Agape International Missions (AIM), experienced in field rescues and protection work, travelled from the United States to Belize to deliver the Situational Awareness and Site Security Training on October 27 and 28, 2025. The training focused on:
• Enhancing situational awareness and threat recognition.
• Implementing the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) for emergencies.
• Strengthening physical site security through practical, cost-effective measures.
• Maintaining a trauma-informed approach when responding to security incidents.
The sessions also included a hands-on drill simulating real-life scenarios to ensure staff readiness and confidence in responding to emergencies. Registrar and Inspectorate staff reaffirmed that such training is part of their yearly mandate to ensure all registered facilities maintain compliance with national standards and continue to provide safe, nurturing environments for Belize’s children and vulnerable populations.

PRESS RELEASE #5/25 – BAHA Rejects PSU Statements Made on October 28, 2025

For Immediate Release:

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is aware of a recent public statement made by the Public Service Union (PSU) on social media and rejects the defamatory assertions.
While we do not comment on individual employment cases to protect privacy and dignity, we reaffirm that BAHA follows established disciplinary procedure and the guidelines in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), including due process such as notice, the opportunity to respond, and the right to representation.
BAHA has been receiving an increasing number of public reports in recent weeks and, where appropriate, has conducted investigations. When facts support that gross misconduct has occurred, proportionate disciplinary action is taken.
BAHA wishes to inform the public that corruption, theft, and dereliction of duties are unacceptable, and those officers who are found to have committed such gross misconduct will be disciplined as established in the CBA.
For clarity, the PSU was not involved in recent disciplinary matters and has not requested information on behalf of any member in this regard. BAHA, therefore, finds their social media posting libelous, presumptuous, and in bad faith. BAHA invites the PSU leadership to engage through the dispute-resolution mechanisms set out in the CBA to address any concerns.
BAHA’s focus remains the delivery of professional services that protect human, animal, and plant health in the best interest of agriculture and national development, and remains committed to recognizing and rewarding the many employees who consistently carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity.

PAHO Implements World Diabetes Foundation Project to Strengthen Primary Health Care to Combat Diabetes in Belize

Belize City, Belize, October 28, 2025 (PAHO) – The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), has launched a new project aimed at improving diabetes care in Belize. Funded by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), this initiative focuses on enhancing the care and management of diabetes through the integration of diabetes services into primary healthcare across Belize.
As part of the Diabetes Care Integration Project, the PAHO/WHO and the MoHW have visited both rural and urban health centers to evaluate current practices and determine how diabetes care can be better integrated into everyday healthcare services. The site visits allowed the team to see firsthand how local health centers are managing diabetes care, gather insights into successful practices, and identify gaps in services and care for strengthening across the country.
In addition to the site visits, a comprehensive diabetes care workshop was held, bringing together over 40 healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, primary care coordinators, medical coordinators, administrators, and internists, among others. The workshop focused on strengthening local expertise in diabetes care and featured discussions on the Global Diabetes Pact, an international initiative to improve diabetes care. Participants also worked on creating a practical roadmap for implementing a diabetes clinical pathway tailored to Belize’s healthcare system.
The goal was to improve healthcare delivery for people living with type 2 diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). By training healthcare workers and enhancing local health systems, the training initiative aimed to reduce the impact of diabetes, prevent complications, and improve the overall health outcomes for patients.
Through this collaboration, the PAHO/WHO, WDF, and MoHW are working to make improvements to the quality of life for people with diabetes in Belize. By integrating diabetes management into primary healthcare, this will help ensure that communities have better access to effective care and prevention strategies.
The PAHO/WHO remains committed to supporting Belize in its efforts to strengthen its healthcare system and provide sustainable, long-term solutions to diabetes.
