‘Border dispute with China India’s biggest challenge’: CDS Anil Chauhan in Gorakhpur

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Friday said India's border dispute with China remains one of the biggest challenges for the country.
While addressing a gathering in Gorakhpur, he said that Pakistan's proxy war against India was the next biggest national security challenge. He added that Isalamabad's strategy has always been to ‘bleed India by a thousand cuts’.
Chauhan also identified regional instability and its impact on India, and the preparations needed to handle future battlefield scenarios with high technology components in a rapidly challenging environment as the third and fourth major challenges.
“Challenges before countries aren’t momentary; they exist in different forms. I think the boundary dispute with China is India’s biggest challenge and will continue to remain so. The second major challenge is Pakistan’s proxy war against India, with a strategy of 'bleed India by a thousand cuts',” Anil Chauhan told the gathering.
“Another challenge is that the domains of war have changed-it now includes cyber and space. Both of our opponents are nuclear powers, and it will always remain a challenge to decide what kind of operations we want to undertake against them,” he added.
The top military official also spoke on Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May, where India targeted terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in retaliation against the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
He said that the armed forces had full operational freedom during the operation and the aim was to "draw a red line to our patience".
“We had full operational freedom, including planning and selection of targets, during Operation Sindoor. The aim was not to avenge the terrorist attack, but to draw a red line of our patience,” he said.
He added that Operation Sindoor was a multi-domain operation, which included cyber warfare and coordination among military wings.
General Chauhan arrived in Gorakhpur on Thursday. He joined Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath for the foundation stone-laying of the Gorakha War Memorial's renovation and the Gorkha Museum. He also offered prayers at the Gorakhnath temple.

'We've Lost India, Russia To Deepest, Darkest, China': Donald Trump Days After PM Modi, Putin, Xi Meet

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said that India and Russia appear to have been lost to what he described as 'deepest, darkest' China. This comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump said, "Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!"
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reacting to Trump's post during media briefing said, "I have no comments to offer on this post at this time."
Nearly a month ago, the US President signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India and cited New Delhi's oil trade with Russia.
The order had stated that New Delhi is directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia, which Washington considers a threat to its national security and foreign policy.
On the other hand, Trump also held a high-level meeting with Putin along with their top officials in Alaska, US.
Trump on Monday escalated his criticism of the US' trade ties with India and called the business relationship a "one-sided disaster".
In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that while India exports "massive amounts of goods" to the United States, American companies face high tariff barriers that severely limit their ability to sell into the Indian market. "What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us."
According to Trump, India has historically imposed high Tariffs, "the most of any country", creating what he described as an imbalanced and unfair trade relationship lasting "for many decades". He claimed that this situation left American businesses at a disadvantage while making the US India’s "biggest client".
During his visit, PM Modi held talks with Xi Jinping, during which both leaders pledged to address lingering border disputes and enhance cooperation between India and China. This marked the Prime Minister's first visit to China in seven years.
As per that, the meeting came amid a gradual stabilisation of India-China ties after the leadership of both nations reached an understanding in Russia in 2024.
The SCO summit in Tianjin marked PM Modi's first visit to China in seven years, a significant development given long-standing tensions, including the deadly 2020 border clash in the Galwan Valley. By meeting both Xi and Putin, PM Modi signalled a willingness to place strategic autonomy above alignment with any single bloc.
Since returning to office, Trump has imposed a combined 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods --25 per cent reciprocal tariffs plus an additional 25 per cent levy targeting India's Russian oil imports. The tariffs are among the steepest Washington has placed on any trade partner.
Trump has repeatedly argued that India has benefited disproportionately from the trading relationship. "What few people understand is that we do very little business with India, but they do a tremendous amount of business with us," he said recently. "It has been a totally one-sided disaster. Also, India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the US."

Mumbai on high alert after terror threat claims of 34 ‘human bombs’: 'Blast will shake entire city'

Mumbai Police on Friday said it is on high alert after a threat call was received in which the caller claimed that 34 “human bombs” carrying “400 kg of RDX” have been planted in 34 vehicles for a blast that will “shake the entire city”. The threat call was received on traffic police helpline.
The threat was issued by an organisation called Lashkar-e-Jihadi on the eve of Anant Chaturdashi, Mumbai Police said, adding that security across the state has been enhanced.
Police said the threat message claims that 34 cars carrying human bombs will be used to detonate 400 kg of RDX, killing one crore people.
On Monday, a 43-year-old man was arrested for allegedly making a hoax bomb threat call about blowing up a railway station in Maharashtra's Thane district.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) said the accused, identified as Rupesh Madhukar Ranpise, called on the police helpline number around 4 pm on Sunday and informed that he had planted a bomb at Kalwa railway station, as per a PTI news agency report.
In August, the ISKCON Temple in the Girgaon area of south Mumbai received a bomb threat email, which turned out to be a hoax after a thorough search of the premises.
The temple administration in the evening on August 22 received an email on an official email ID, warning of a bomb blast, an official said.
The official said temple officials informed the police, following which a search was conducted with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) on the premises at night.
The police did not find anything suspicious during the search, and it was classified as a hoax, he said.
The temple had received a similar threat email in September as well, he said.
On July 25, Mumbai Police received a call threatening a bomb blast at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). A thorough check of the facility did not reveal anything suspicious.

Delhi HC Orders State Govt To Pay Rs 1 Crore Compensation To Widow Of Principal Who Died On Covid Duty

In a big win for a Covid-affected family, the Delhi High Court has directed the state government to pay Rs 1 crore as ex gratia compensation to the widow of a school principal who lost his life after contracting Covid-19 while supervising vaccination work at his institution. The amount must be released within eight weeks. A bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela underlined that the government’s Covid compensation policy was created as a welfare measure for families of those who died while performing essential duties during the pandemic.
The widow had challenged a November 2024 order by a single judge that had denied her claim on the ground that her husband was not on Covid duty in April 2021. She argued that his school was a designated vaccination centre, and as principal, he was directly responsible for assigning and overseeing pandemic-related duties. Her plea had first been rejected in December 2021, with authorities insisting that her husband had died while carrying out 'regular duties' rather than Covid duty.
The court observed that the coronavirus kept mutating and posed unprecedented challenges even to the best medical experts worldwide. It stated that such realities must be kept in mind and that applications under beneficial policies should never be examined with a narrow or overly technical approach.
The judges reiterated that the 2020 Delhi government policy was designed to extend relief to families of those who died in the line of duty during the pandemic. They made it clear that the widow’s case deserved the protection and benefits of that policy.

AI Express Delhi-Indore flight lands safely after mid-air engine fault

A Delhi-Indore Air India Express flight having 161 passengers on board on Friday suffered a mid-air engine fault, with the pilot making a 'PAN-PAN' call to indicate non-life-threatening emergency, but the aircraft landed safely at the airport here with a delay of 20 minutes, an official said.
The aircraft landed at the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore and everyone on board was safe, he said. "After receiving information about a technical fault in one of the engines of the Air India Express plane coming from Delhi to Indore, we took all precautions and the aircraft landed at Indore airport at 9.55 am. As per the schedule, it was supposed to land at the Indore airport at 9.35 am," Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport Director Vipinkant Seth told PTI.
The crew of this plane with flight number IX 1028 and all 161 passengers on board are completely safe, he said. Seth said that the pilot of the plane sent a 'PAN-PAN' signal to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) after which fire and medical arrangements were made at the airport as per the standard operating procedure (SOP). 'PAN-PAN' is an internationally valid signal used in maritime and air radio communication. In aviation, it indicates an urgent situation that requires assistance but is not immediately life-threatening. When a pilot sends a 'PAN-PAN' signal, it means that the crew needs immediate help from ATC or 'ground service'.

NIRF Rankings 2025: AIIMS Delhi Leads Again, PGIMER Chandigarh Follows at 2 in Medical Category

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has once again clinched the #1 position in the NIRF 2025 Medical category, continuing its dominance since the category's inception in 2018. In a notable debut, AIIMS Delhi also topped the Dental category, dethroning last year’s leader, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, which now stands at second place.
While AIIMS maintains its long-held supremacy in medical education, its position in the overall institutional rankings has seen a slight decline—dropping to 8th place in 2025, compared to 7th in 2024 and 6th in 2023.
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMR), Chandigarh, and Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, have held steady at 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, in the medical rankings—unchanged since 2018. Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, and Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, round out the top five at 4th and 5th positions, respectively.
One of the significant changes in this year's list is the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, dropping from 4th to 7th rank, falling out of the top five for the first time in years.

Portion of Singhola flyover on NH-44 caves in at Delhi border

A portion of the Singhola flyover on National Highway 44 (NH-44) near Alipur in outer Delhi caved in on Thursday morning, affecting vehicular movement on the carriageway going towards Sonepat, Panipat and Karnal through the Delhi-Haryana border.
The Delhi Traffic Police diverted vehicles to alternative routes and also issued a public advisory on social media platforms, informing commuters about the road cave-in.
“All vehicles intending to go towards Sonepat, Panipat, Karnal, etc via NH-44 are advised to take NH-44 from Mukarba Chowk to UER-II to DSIIDC Bawana Sector-4 cut and take right turn to NH-344M towards Jhinjholi border to enter Sonepat in Haryana,” the traffic police said in their social media post.
The road-owning agency, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), posted on X, “NHAI would like to inform that the settlement happened because of leakage from water pipeline crossing the said section of NH-44, due to which water spread into the approaches and foundation. The water pipeline was immediately shut down by Delhi Jal Board, and NHAI promptly diverted the traffic to start restoration work, ensuring minimal inconvenience to the commuters.”
The Delhi Jal Board did not respond to queries on the matter.

Offered by the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, a joint venture between IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi, the year-long programme blends scientific research, clinical application, and business strategy to equip professionals with the expertise to design and deliver transformative healthcare solutions.
The diploma has been conceived at a time when India’s healthcare market is projected to expand from approximately USD 180 billion in 2023 to nearly USD 320 billion by 2028, fuelled by greater investments in infrastructure and technology. Parallelly, single-speciality hospitals are expected to more than double their market from USD 15 billion to USD 31 billion within the next four years, reflecting the growing demand for focused healthcare delivery. On the global stage, the wearable medical devices market is anticipated to surge from USD 45 billion in 2024 to nearly USD 152 billion by 2029, expanding at a CAGR of 27.5%. Against this backdrop, the programme responds to a critical industry need by preparing professionals for high-impact roles, including healthcare product managers, regulatory specialists, technology consultants and health data analysts.
Speaking on the launch, Prof. Arnab Chanda, Programme Co-ordinator and Associate Professor at the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, IIT Delhi said, “The Online Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Product Development and Management reflects our vision of nurturing professionals who can transform healthcare through innovation grounded in scientific and clinical understanding. By merging technology, regulatory insights and commercial strategy, we aim to create a generation of leaders who are not only capable of designing novel solutions but also of steering them successfully to the marketplace. It is about bridging disciplines to achieve meaningful impact on patient care and the healthcare ecosystem at large.”
Delivered through live and interactive online classes, the diploma draws on IIT Delhi’s distinguished faculty, senior clinicians and leading industry experts to provide a blend of academic rigour and practical experience. Learners will participate in real-time simulations, case-based analyses and hands-on projects, complemented by an optional two-day immersion on campus to encourage peer learning and professional exchange.
The curriculum, spread across 18 academic credits, brings together advanced and applied modules such as Biofabrication, Soft Tissue Characterisation, Biomedical Engineering, Healthcare Wearables Design and Entrepreneurship and Management in Healthcare. Learners will gain proficiency with tools including 3D printing platforms, AutoCAD, Arduino prototyping kits, AI/ML applications and UX/UI frameworks, culminating in capstone projects designed to deliver scalable solutions for real-world healthcare challenges.
Applicants with relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications, or at least two years’ experience in allied sectors, are eligible to enrol. On completion of the programme, successful graduates will receive official transcripts from IIT Delhi, recognition through the Academic Bank of Credits, the option of a campus immersion and affiliate alumni status, which will provide access to continued learning resources, together with the privilege of attending convocation at IIT Delhi.

Delhi High Court Launches Mobile App, Explores Live Streaming of Proceedings

The Delhi High Court took a significant step towards digitising judicial services with the launch of its mobile application. The app is aimed at enhancing accessibility for judges, lawyers, litigants, and the public. The app, available for download on Android and iOS devices, provides seamless access to e-services such as case status updates, cause lists, and e-filing.
Inaugurated by Supreme Court Judge Vikram Nath in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the app launch was accompanied by other IT initiatives, including a dedicated portal for judicial officers, an e-Office pilot project, and the integration of the MCD appellate tribunal and juvenile justice boards into the eCourts system.
Justice Nath also urged the Delhi High Court to implement live streaming of court proceedings, noting that it is a premier institution and should lead in making judicial processes accessible to the public. "The public at large cannot view the court proceedings. Delhi HC must allow live streaming," he said, recalling a previous experiment in October 2023 that has since stalled.
Chief Minister Gupta announced that the government would provide free Wi-Fi in all courts to support judges, lawyers, and litigants. She also highlighted ongoing efforts to address civic issues, such as pollution control and Yamuna river cleanup, humorously adding that these efforts aim to avoid judicial reprimands.
Chief Justice Upadhyaya expressed optimism about the e-initiatives, stating, “These efforts will make the systems in the high court and district courts more efficient, energizing the state for the common good."
