A gang of over 50 youths accosted cruise passengers who arrived in Mombasa yesterday and made off with valuables, leading to the cancellation of their visits to the port city.

The attack, which occurred at the renowned Pembe za Ndovu on Moi Avenue, prompted the police and county officials to deploy officers to areas frequented by tourists.

The 1,169 passengers and crew arrived aboard the MV Crystal Symphony from Mahe, Seychelles, and will be departing today (Tuesday) for the vibrant Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar.

This was the final cruise ship to dock at the Port of Mombasa this season, which ends in April. The next cruise ship season begins later in September.
"Officers from the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and the National Police Service (NPS) boarded the ship to apologise for the attack and assure the tourists," said a KTB officer yesterday.

The official, who requested anonymity as she is not authorised to speak to the press, said no tourist was injured, although most cancelled their visit to Old Town and returned to the ship.

Security agencies are battling a surge in crime in Mombasa and Kwale, attributed to machete-wielding gangs terrorising locals, traders, and tourists. At least 200 suspects were arrested on Saturday.

MOMBASA - LIKONI FERRY SCUFFLE BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND PRIVATE SECURITY GUARDS.

On the morning of February 5, 2025, tensions boiled over when a scuffle between pedestrians and private security guards escalated into chaos, leaving two guards injured.

Eyewitnesses report that the clash erupted when a pedestrian, frustrated by prolonged delays, attempted to bypass the guardrails to board the ferry illegally.

Security personnel intervened, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control as an already agitated crowd turned against them.

Likoni MP Mishi Mboko condemned the incident, blaming poor security management. "What happened was avoidable. The security team lacks proper training in crowd control, and their first instinct is often aggression instead of de-escalation, she said.

In a letter addressed to Ismax Security Services Ltd, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) criticized the security personnel deployed at the ferry for their unprofessional conduct.

Detectives in Nairobi are looking into the death of Sagar Panara, a 36-year-old MART Networks employee who was shot dead by unknown assailants in what appears to be a targeted attack on Tuesday evening.

According to police reports, Panara, of Asian descent, was shot as he returned home from the Aga Khan Sports Club, raising the possibility that he was being followed.
He was driving a white Toyota Corolla when the attackers ambushed him at the entrance to his residential compound.

After a brief altercation, the assailants shot Panara in the neck, just below her right ear, and fled the scene.

Neighbours and police officers quickly responded to the gunshots, rushing Panara to Aga Khan Hospital, where he passed away while receiving emergency treatment.

Panara’s wife, Nejal Panara, confirmed that he had arrived moments after returning from the sports club.

After sweeping the crime scene, investigators found six ominous leaflets left behind by the attackers at the scene.

The notes bore the message "VACATE NAROK LAND, ONE PANARA DOWN, AND NAROK," suggesting a possible link to a land dispute in the Narok region.

Police are also considering whether the Panara family’s possible ties to a piece of land in Narok could have triggered the violent attack.

The murder has rattled the Parklands neighbourhood and raised fears of escalating violence tied to land disputes.
