Mike and I had a good day out on the river metal detecting. I found these 4 coins all in one hole at a site where soldiers retreated across a river during a battle and many of them drowned.

It is interesting to note that all 4 cents are different. There are two types of sutler tokens, which were private issued coins that were used by the soldiers to buy goods from sutlers (private goods salesmen) that followed every army at that time. They had to be issued because there was a severe scarcity of U.S. issued cents during the war because of hoarding.

The other two cents are U.S. issued. One is a common Indian Head cent and the other is a less common, and earlier issued, Flying Eagle cent. They all date from 1857 to 1863.

We are thinking we should probably go back to the site, especially considering most of this was found in the last hour of the hunt. You think we should?
