MOMDAYS
💕
My heart has been heavy with a massive to-do list lately. The kids have had extra needs. We've had extra responsibilities on our plates. There's future planning to be done for school. My husband and I have some decisions to make for our house.
💕
Somedays, it's too much. I know you know.
💕
I came across this old poem for the umpteenth time in my life this weekend, and no matter how many times I read it, it refreshes me, refocuses me, tells my heart what it needs to hear. Just do the next thing and leave the results to the only One who can control outcomes. It was a good word to my busy mom mind this week. I hope it's a good one to you.
💕
"From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: “DO THE NEXT THING.”

Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing

Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.

Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing."

MOMDAYS

I love this quote from L'Engle on the days motherhood feels roughest and even "smallest." It reminds me that even as I'm leading my children to grow, I still have my own work to do growing up-- to own, accept, and love the role (and roles) I've been given in this life.

I know somedays feel so small, mama, that the work you do for your family maybe feels tiny and unseen and decidedly unglamorous and un-Insta worthy. Or just unworthy, period. But what an incredible role you've been given in this play to make a difference in the lives of your kids, partner, family members. You and your role matter so much, mama.

LONG HUNTER STATE PARK
🌳
Breathe deeply.

That's what we did on a recent getaway afternoon at Long Hunter State Park. After hmming and hawing over whether all the pack-up was worth it, we decided any mild day in February is, so my husband rolled the kayaks onto the trailer and the four of us headed down to Long Hunter State Park.

At an easy 30 minutes from Murfreesboro, Long Hunter has become a favorite spot for our family to hit the water. The pretty water-front park features bathrooms, a small dock with jon boat and canoe rentals in the summer, a spacious parking lot, nature trails, and a great little playground for busy kids. Clearly it's an area favorite-- Families fish and skip rocks; lots of strollers take the paved trails.

Thanks to Couchville Lake's no-motor and swimming rules. the water is smooth and calm-- perfect for a 7 and 9 year old learning to paddle and mom and dad to relax. We kayak a while and then beach the boats to explore marshy mini-islands in the lake and collect shells, flowers, and rocks. Mud is the name of the game here as the pebble beaches are frequently under water. The treasures we find are worth it, and we climb back into our crafts with mushy shoes and full pockets. 🛶

An afternoon float means a 2-3 hour visit for us, but it's easy to spend the whole day exploring at Long Hunter. Visitors can choose from more than 30 miles of hiking and walking trails at the park, including an arboretum and a reading trail for littles. Long Hunter is also home to a myriad of reptile, bird, and butterfly species, so it's perfect for naturalists of all ages to watch, journal, and study.

Or just breathe deeply.

Ready to go? Long Hunter Park is located off Hobson Pike in Hermitage. Head to their website for directions and trail maps along with printable nature study guides. All the goods are at https://tnstateparks.com/parks/info/long-hunter

Usually the kids and I focus on 1 Corinthians 13 in February, but this one came up in a recent morning reading. I had turned to 1 Timothy because I was curious again about what Paul said to his young friend. I wanted his words for my own mentoring, leading, and discipleship with my children.

The aim of our charge, our calling, our job, as parents and as people, is love.

There's so much to unpack of course in that four-letter word, but sometimes in the middle of laundry, music lessons, nature journals, and a burnt supper, I can begin to question myself: What's this all for? What are we working on, again?

Love.

We're learning about love for God and each other.

Simple, but not easy. Straightforward, but a winding road.

But it's our goal ❤

HELLO, “DOLLY”!
🦋
Well, that was fun!
🦋
Our adventures took us to yesterday for the announcement of Dolly Parton's new Broadway show "Dolly: An Original Musical" opening this summer at Belmont University (before coming to Broadway in 2026). A packed media crowd was treated to a fireside-style chat with Tennessean's Marcus Dowling, the Queen of Country herself, and show director Bartlett Sher at the university’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
🦋
Parton, who is co-authoring the book with media legend Maria Schlatter, says the show won’t be just stories and songs heard before. “A lot of people think they know everything about me,” she laughed. “There’s a lot of things they don’t know that I’ve put that in there.” She added, “I want people to go away feeling like they’ve been entertained of course but that they also see the person inside of me.”
🦋
New songs include “I Wouldn’t Be Here if You Hadn’t Been There,” which the singer said refers to the significant people in her life and to God who made her life possible. (Fans can look for a release soon).
🦋
Sher, described by The New York Times as one of America’s “most original and exciting directors,” shared warm enthusiasm for the project. “I think the theater is now a great place to hear this story,” he said, referring to Parton’s life as “our story.” “It’s just not a story you ‘get’ over the phone at home, but by being in the same place in the same room, seeing it together.”
🦋
The conversation preceded a second announcement of the singer’s partnership with Belmont named “Dolly U” in which Belmont students will actively work on the "Dolly" production, with future immersive work study theater opportunities to grow in the future.
🦋
Ready to go (this summer)? “Dolly: An Original Musical” premiers July 18-August 17, 2025 at Belmont’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $40-$275 and can be purchased now at dollymusical.com.

What are you reading, Mamas?
📚
I'm in the middle of the second of the Austen Family Chronicles by Madeleine L'Engle. So far, the first is my favorite; this has some teen angst stuff going on that gives me anxiety, but I love this family so I'll keep reading. The Austens are a family of six, with second oldest Vicky as the narrator. The parents are smart, kind and loving. The kids are quirky individuals who nevertheless work as a team. Each of them try very hard to not be "muffiny"-- a term explained in the book that means non-conformists-- but both becoming and remaining themselves no matter what life throws. It's a good idea for a family to wrestle with. Refreshing, too, since so often YA novels show just one person in a family being an individual. Each of the Austens are figuring it out.
📚
These books say a lot about what L'Engle was working out in her own ideas of family. They are warm, genuine, and certainly non-formulaic. As a mom, I respect it a lot. I've urged my 9yo to try the first in the series, but she found it dull. I told her that maybe when she's a bit older she'll be ready for it. I just don't think she asking identity questions yet, and that's OK. Some books need to wait on us.
📚
Dear L'Engle. Her nonfiction has helped me as much or more than many spiritual writers. Sometimes I struggle to read her fiction-- It often feels awkward to me. I don't even enjoy A Wrinkle in Time that much, though I appreciate the ideas at work. But in my book, she is always worth considering.
📚
Ready to read? I found my collection on , but you can pick them at Linebaugh Library 😉

PLANTING TULIPS
🌷
My girl and I did some planting on New Year's weekend. It was one of those mild days Tennessee has in January, and we took advantage of it. We wandered our garden beds, dreamed a little about the spring, and put some tulips in beds to sleep.
🌷
Now in our coldest winter days I think about those things in the ground. I can't wait to see them when they rise. For now, they're doing what they're supposed to do: being quiet; resting beneath the surface.
🌷
I know it's the same for us: winter forces us to rest in many ways and be productive in others. I told my husband this morning that a least the house will be clean and all the school work done this week.
🌷
But some of us busy-brain types struggle with that. It can be hard to stay in and do the inside work both of house and soul. But I remind myself this time of year that of course it serves a purpose, of course the resting and the wintering serves us. We need the quieter-than-usual, the darkness, the rest to let something grow that could not otherwise. Tulips (and many other flowers) often won't bloom without a long, hard frost. I guess we're not too different.
🌷
So this week I open myself to be a little more okay with more quiet-- more reading books, more piecing puzzles, more messy craft projects, more cooking experiments, more playing with the cats, and more nothing-planned time with my loved ones-- things I often busy through when the weather is different.
🌷
And of course the family and I will dream of warmer days and the things we'll do in them-- trips to take, gardens to plant, outdoor adventures to try-- but this month we also take notes from the things we've planted and embrace the season of rest.

The Rutherford County Courthouse Museum

If you love fieldtrips but have a hard time figuring out where to begin, I get it. There have been so many times I spent a whole lotta time and money taking wiggly littles to faraway attractions, only to stay 30 minutes and realize everyone was overstimulated, under-snacked, and really not interested.

Yay, Mom.

So, I'm in love with the 7- and 9- year old phase where kiddos can read, stay awake, and use WORDS to tell me what they need and what they're interested in. Of course as they grow, we do more and go further, but we always enjoy coming back to visit our local spots.

ENTER THE RUTHERFORD COUNTY COURTHOUSE.

Chances are you've seen it, but have you been in? As one of only six antebellum courthouses remaining in the state, the architecture is striking enough, but with new exhibits inside, this small, FREE attraction is a wonderful introduction to Murfreesboro history. Displays showcase furniture, art, weaponry, photographs and other artifacts that trace life in the city since its inception over 200 years ago.

I was a little nervous the kids would think it redundant or boring since we've visited local history spots since they could walk and have climbed the courthouse steps since, well, they could crawl. No worries here: they were thrilled to be allowed free reign inside!

My military-loving boy was captivated by the displays of Civil War guns and sabers, and even WWII accessories from local veterans. My girl enjoyed the portraits and samplers, and neither could get over the fact that they were actually allowed INSIDE THE COURTROOM.

As a native I wasn't sure how much I'd see that I haven't seen before, but of course there was plenty-- from the Red Rose Dairy products to distillery jugs and the tulip poplar furniture. The current medical exhibit is fascinating, and a reminder of the diversity of leadership that brought medical care up to current standards. We had to take a picture with the original internal workings of the courthouse clock and look closely at the anatomy of horse-hair plaster on the brick walls. (My son reported that was his favorite part)

Definitely an experience worth repeating. After our first visit, the kids asked to return again (an easy yes is the benefit of free admission!). For a simple, local fieldtrip, that's a pretty priceless response.

Ready to go? The museum is free and open every day; 8am-5pm Monday-Friday, 8am-3pm on Saturday, and 1-5pm on Sunday. Learn more at https://rutherfordcountytn.gov/courthouse-museum
