Tune in tonight at 6pm for your monthly North State Water Report. I’ll be speaking with Gary Mulcahy. Gary is Winnemem Wintu and the tribes government liaison with more than 30 years of working on tribal water rights along with other cultural preservation efforts. We’ll be talking about california water management and issues related to the current political climate. A lot has happened since January and more could concerning the very sensitive bay delta and water storage. Federal Water Project management could drastically change conditions for the worst.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow night, Thursday Dec 5 from 6-7pm. My quest will be Research Scientist Jim Thorne from UC Davis Department of Environmental Science and Policy. Jim’s research focus has been a predictive model, “Basin Characterization Model” the spatial model that combines air temp and precipitation with ground conditions to make predictions about soil moisture, plant stress (climate water deficit), snow pack, runoff and recharge. Our talk will include landscape patterns of the water cycle and those might affect vegetation.
You’ll only hear about this kind of research here on your people powered community radio stations North State Water Report.

“The researchers found that the average rate of sinking for the entire valley reached nearly an inch per year between 2006 and 2022.”

A study published Nov. 19 in Communications Earth and Environment shows land in California's San Joaquin Valley has been sinking at record-breaking rates over the last two decades as groundwater extraction has outpaced natural recharge.
