Tenzing-Hillary Airport അതിന്റെ അസാധാരണമായ സ്ഥാനം കൊണ്ട് ലോകമെമ്പാടും പ്രശസ്തി നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും അപകടകരമായ വിമാനത്താവളത്തിന്റെ പട്ടികയിൽ ഇത് ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. Everest Base Camp ലേക്ക് ഉള്ള എന്റെ trekking ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഇവിടെ നിന്നുമാണ്.

Everest Base Camp ട്രെക്ക് ചെയ്യുവാനും ട്രെക്കിങ്ങ് കഴിഞ്ഞു തിരികെ പോകുന്നതും ഈ Airport ഇത് കൂടിയാണ് . High winds, cloud cover, എന്നിവ പലപ്പോഴും വിമാനങ്ങൾ വൈകുകയോ വിമാനത്താവളം അടയ്ക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യാൻ ഇടയാക്കാറുണ്ട്.

ചരിത്രം
1964-ൽ സർ എഡ്മണ്ട് ഹിലാരിയുടെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിലാണ് വിമാനത്താവളം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്, അദ്ദേഹം ആദ്യം ഇവിടുത്തെ ഒരു പരന്ന കൃഷിയിടത്തിൽ നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ , പ്രാദേശിക കർഷകർ അവരുടെ ഭൂമി വിട്ടുകൊടുക്കാൻ തയ്യാറായില്ല, അതിനാൽ വിമാനത്താവളം നിലവിലെ ഈ സ്ഥാനത്ത് തന്നെ നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഹിലരി 2,650 യുഎസ് ഡോളറിന് പ്രാദേശിക ഷെർപ്പകളിൽ (Sherpas ) നിന്ന് സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി, വിമാനത്താവള നിർമാണത്തിൽ അവരെയും പങ്കാളികളാക്കി.

Tenzing–Hillary Airport has been referred to as the most dangerous airport in the world. Arriving and departing aircraft must use a single runway (06 for landing and 24 for takeoff). There is a low prospect of a successful go-around on a short final approach due to the terrain. There is high terrain immediately beyond the northern end of the runway and a steeply angled drop at the southern end of the runway into the valley below.
