Australia is not, nor has it ever been, a “fair country.” The Australian media is comprehensively (and quite rightly) covering the US riots, news readers wearing faces of concern for the unfolding situation.

This is in stark contrast with the comparative silence around National Sorry Day last Tuesday 26 May, which remembers the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples, and acknowledges the strength of the Stolen Generation survivors. Where were all the news bulletins and faces of concern last week?

Genocide. Slavery. Theft and abuse of more than
100 000 children. Destruction of culture and identity. Deaths in custody. Systemic racism that continues to this day. This is our uncomfortable history that is largely glossed over.

Same as US police have not been held accountable, Australian police have never been held accountable for Aboriginal deaths in custody.

I am proud to be Australian but ashamed of the widespread apathy towards our true history and ongoing racism. I was guilty of the same apathy and I am sorry.
