Oscars Weekend: Notes from a Movie Freak...
Time to dish on movies a bit, and escape the realities of the world for a couple of days.

After a slow film start, and a major strike, 2023 turned out to be a very good year for movies after all.
I have seen all of the Best Pic nominees, as well as many others, some of which deserved nominations more than those that were nominated.
No surprise there, happens every year, and also no surprise that this year will probably offer very little drama, since Oppenheimer will sweep virtually all of the major categories (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Editing, Music, Cinemaphotography). It may also win for Sound and Adapted Screenplay, which would be a shame because Sound absolutely deserves to go to Zone of Interest (the most important part of the movie), and 3 other screenplay nominees were much better than Oppenheimer, in my opinion. Oppenheimer was brilliant, and it will be a well-deserved win, but it just isn't my favorite film of the year.

The closest race is between Lily Gladstone (Killer of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things) for Best Actress. There is no doubt in my mind that Emma deserves the award, but Lily will win for a fine performance that will be history-making due to her indigenous heritage. It's always about more than just the performances at the Oscars, and this year will probably carry on the tradition.

Further Dishes and Opinions:
Maestro did not deserve any of its nominations (well, maybe makeup), especially for Picture, Actor (Bradley Cooper), and Screenplay (Ridiculous! A weak point of the movie). Such a disappointing film, all style and no real substance or emotion; a hollow rendering of the complexity and genius of Bernstein, and a shallow view of his marriage to Felicia.
Cooper bit off more than he could chew here, in a vain attempt to do it all. I found his performance to be contrived and so self-conscious that I could never forget that he was "acting."

Most of Maestro's nominations should have gone to All of Us Strangers. Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor and Actress, and Screenplay, for starters.

There should be a category for Best Animal Performance.
Meesa, the dog from Anatomy of a Fall, would win paws down!!

Greta Gerwig deserved a Best Director nomination.

Past Lives deserved many more nominations, even though it received two biggies. What an extraordinarily beautiful film.

Teyana Taylor, from A Thousand and One, so deserved to have her acting recognized with a nomination. And the boy in Anatomy of a Fall was marvelous. But there are always more fine performances than the number of nominations allows...

Biggest Surprises:
I avoided watching Barbie for so long, and then upon viewing realized that it is absolutely brilliant.

I also "refused" to watch Zone of Interest, thinking it was nothing more than gardening scenes next to a concentration camp, but boy was I wrong. So quietly and powerfully disturbing, and the best use of sound in a motion picture that I can remember. Truly masterful film making. Sandra Huller was great, after being so great in Anatomy of a Fall. What an actress.

Biggest Disappointments:
Maestro
May December
Rotting in the Sun
Passages

Still many more films to see, so the order or grouping may change over time, but here is my list of Top/Favorite Films of 2023:

Poor Things
Past Lives
Barbie
Anatomy of a Fall
American Fiction

All of Us Strangers
Killers of the Flower moon
Oppenheimer
Zone of Interest
The Last Repair Shop (Short Doc)

The Holdovers
Rustin
Saltburn
Nyad
A Thousand and One
El Conde

Whether you watch "silly" award ceremonies or not, turn off the news and put on a movie this weekend, to escape, educate, and celebrate the art of cinema, even if just for a while...
