West O'ahu residents are "overweight" and "diabetic"? That's according to local economics "expert" Paul Brewbaker.

Today's 🤡 of the week: the "state" and mainstream media go-to "economist" pseudoscientist Paul Brewbaker, whose half assed "analyses" cherry pick statistics and anecdotal stories from his friends to justify unsustainable economic policies that are driving up our cost of living and degrading and destroying our 'āina and culture.

Here we see this "top" economist helping Haseko (a.k.a. the Wai Kai wavepool developer) defraud homebuyers (lovingly referred to as "du*****es") and lie to government officials. And also share some of his personal thoughts about westside O'ahu residents.

does the city council still take advice from this hack?

LĀ 'APŌPŌ!

you been making anykine and getting away with it for too long...and it shows. Now a community grieving the death of their loved ones and destruction of their beloved 'āina gotta go fly over to your office again, cause you only like listen to your high makamaka $$$ friends instead of the common people you are supposed to represent. That this has to be done is itself a travesty.

O'ahu folks let's go kāko'o our community representatives 12 noon tomorrow.

One clown 🤡 down.

Tl;dr: This pīlau sellout has been using his position as a senator to enable corporate water hoarding and now he is going to try to make bank $$$ from the heartbreaking devastation of the recent Maui fires.

1. Gilbert Keith Agaran, a sitting *senator* and corporate attorney, straight up said he would serve his clients *before* his voters.

2. Ten years ago, the same Gil Keith Agaran argued that because Wailuku Water Company historically cut off Nā Wai 'Ehā kalo farmers from stream flow, they should be able to continue to do so.

That mauka to makai flow should not be prioritized.

That his plantation oligarchy client's *waste of millions of gallons of public trust water per day because of leaky ditches and reservoirs* ("system losses") shouldn't legally matter.

3. And since becoming a senator he has introduced bills year after year to support the storing of stream water in leaky and unsafe reservoirs for "fire fighting"- without even requiring these reservoirs to be lined, so they don't needlessly leak/waste millions of gallons of diverted stream water daily.

4. Taking more water than you need is unacceptable. Water hoarding is hewa. Wasting water by the millions of gallons per day via leaky reservoirs, just so you can divert that much more stream water even when it harms 'āina, muliwai, and mahi'ai is hewa loa. And that is what this pīlautician argued for throughout his legal and political career.

One could very reasonably believe Senator Keith-Agaran's reservoir bills were intended to justify plantation-turned-real estate investment firms' continued dewatering of streams throughout the islands. There is no other apparent explanation.

And especially when he has admitted to serving his clients before the public interest.

Native Hawaiian Legal Corp on the first "Emergency Proclamation on Housing" meeting with projects for discussion (see also previous post):

"Allowing a project to proceed without Chapter 6E protection and under the 'nominally sensitive area' standard means that developers have a blank check to 'discover' Native Hawaiian burials by backhoe during construction rather than through a thoughtful, pre-development review of the intended project site.

This will undoubtedly lead to the destruction and removal of any iwi kūpuna that may be present with no opportunity to meaningfully advocate for the redesign of the project to avoid unearthing burials from their intended final resting place.

This backwards practice also impacts the traditional and customary practices of those who engage in mālama iwi kūpuna and whose ultimate goal is always to preserve iwi in place.

Irreversible and irretrievable impacts on these resources is certainly not unlikely."

Discussing Maui's future in Honolulu. Hiding details on development projects until Saturday and wanting comments by Monday morning. Proposing a well in an overpumped aquifer (after Governor Green strips away water management area designation, the only thing that can protect DHHL and regular folks' water from golf courses and resorts). Suspending iwi protections without knowing what archaeological surveys have been done. This is how "magic bullet" housing team is operating. Auwē. 😤

Mālama yourself, mālama each other.

Meanwhile, our people need PPE and guidance (in multiple languages, and not just the nonsensical "Spanish" on the website).

Ash, soil, water may contain highly toxic dioxin, PCBs, benzenes, etc. which can cause cancer and many other long term health inpacts.

We need a facility to do continuous testing of soil, water, and fish to safeguard our health, lives and 'āina.

"The harmful effects of wildfire exposure don’t disappear once the flames are extinguished, experts said. There is growing research that suggests breathing in the tiny particles from wildfire smoke can produce cognitive deficits, which may appear in as little as six to 12 months or even years later.

Surviving a near-death experience also raises the risk of post-traumatic stress, with such symptoms as depression, sleep disorders, anxiety and survivor’s guilt, researchers said."

West Maui Land Co. and their associated landowner/developer corporations failed to properly maintain the invasive weeds and brush around Lahaina for years, while also depriving kalo farmers and streams of water they hoarded for their luxury gentlemen "farms" that grow swimming pools and manicured lawns on agricultural zoned lands.

These corporations and people like Tremble have driven up land and housing costs (inc. property taxes), sold out our food security, and have now exploited this tragedy and 's ignorance (?) to hoard more stream and aquifer water. And by taking out Kaleo Manuel, they have now placed water security and the public trust across Ka Pae 'Āina under threat.

There are no words to describe the magnitude of this despicable pīlau behaviour and the Governor siding with these corporations with years of legal abuses only makes obvious who is really calling the shots, when it comes to the "state" and private corporations.

IF you are a search/recovery worker or go into or by the destruction zone: Please wear respirators if get and remember the toxic ash can stay on your clothes and poison other people if you wear it around, etc. (so gotta change and store contaminated clothes to be disposed of properly). This stuff is nasty and dangerous and Dr. not saying much if anything.

Maka'ala Alert!! Governor Green signs emergency housing proclamation to strip away 'āina protections for non-affordable housing development, says he is a YIMBY... what does that mean??

(from https://www.davisite.org/2021/07/you-might-be-a-yimby-if.html):

"You might be a YIMBY if

You advocate for land use deregulation and “filter down” affordable housing thinking those are very different from Reaganomics, deregulation, and trickle-down housing.

You are a “faux-gressive” who laces your rhetoric with terms like “social justice” and “equity” and “sustainability”; meanwhile, the effects of the policies you promote kick people of color out of their homes in lower-income areas  and promote unregulated sprawl  onto farmland or habitat.

You pretend that people who point out the deep connections of your movement to development real estate interests and funding are “conspiracy theorists.”

You need a foil to vilify, so you pretend there are organized NIMBY groups that want nothing built anywhere ever, then ferociously battle this strawman.

You claim we have “under-built” housing for decades and blame it on the NIMBY boogeyman without evidence.

You think that because you took one economics class in college and learned one thing (the “law” of supply and demand, not really a law at all), you understand complex housing markets and that your simplistic prescriptions are “solutions”.

You engage in naive magical thinking, conjuring up a world where if you build more housing, only the people you want to move in, move in—no rich out-of-town investors! —and developers will want to build so much housing that prices will drop, reducing their profit margins.

You claim affordable housing activists who advocate for specific affordable housing programs are too naive to understand how free market capitalism and Econ 101 will benefit them.

You avoid even mentioning actual programs that produce affordable housing such as inclusionary zoning programs and funding public housing.

You believe that “build baby build” is the only answer and eschew all other solutions or even suggestions as to how to get affordable housing built."

Hewa in plain sight: DHHL Director Kali Watson taking orders from Maui developer kingpin Everett Dowling - iykyk - to withdraw the nomination of an extremely qualified water law expert for the DHHL seat on the East Maui water authority with a developer shill.

Good news: the Hawaiian Homes Commission (because of beneficiary outcry) put a stop to Watson's b.s. move.

ACTION needed TONIGHT! Sneaky legislators amended this bill at the last minute to let the counties turn 100 acres of rural or agricultural land into urban land - without any Land Use Commission consideration of impacts to 'āina, cultural practices, or even things like food security, climate resilience, and jobs for locals.

Floor vote is tomorrow - so we need to let them know TONIGHT we are watching and won't let them keep making anykine with ou 'āina at stake.
