Energy insecurity, the inability to adequately meet basic household energy needs, affects millions of U.S. households and is deeply connected to housing quality, income inequality, and racial and health disparities (Hernandez, 2013, 2016, 2024). This comprehensive toolkit explores the drivers and impacts of energy insecurity and provides guidance on using policy, partnerships, and community-centered strategies to address it. It highlights the power of qualitative data (like interviews and focus groups) and quantitative tools (like surveys and mapping) in identifying inequities and shaping solutions.

August is LIHEAP Action Month! 💡

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides critical support to vulnerable populations in the U.S. by helping low-income households afford energy costs, particularly during weather disasters and extreme temperatures. Millions of Americans, including seniors, veterans, children, and individuals with disabilities, rely on LIHEAP to avoid energy insecurity, which has forced some to forgo basic needs like food and medicine to pay utility bills. LIHEAP prevents disconnections, restores power, and funds weatherization, improving safety and energy efficiency for households. With increasing climate-related disasters and extreme temperatures, protecting and expanding LIHEAP is vital to reduce energy poverty and protect public health.
