FROM THE ARCHIVES TO THE FUTURE: TK RETURNS WITH A SPOTLIGHT ON ZIMBABWEAN TALENT
By NgomaXD Reporter.
HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Back in 2003/2004, the Zimbabwean entertainment scene was quietly preparing for a seismic shift. At the heart of it stood Tonderai Nokutenda Katsande — affectionately known as TK — a multi-platform broadcaster whose experience in South Africa’s high-energy radio and television world would collide with the promise of Zimbabwean youth.
Under the visionary leadership of Mai Makore (Mrs. Susan Makore), Kidznet at ZBCTV was taking shape. Inspired by the success of talent discovery platforms like the ones that launched the careers of Rebecca Malope and gospel sensation Keketso, TK brought a new idea to Zimbabwean television: Spotlight – Your Chance to Shine.
Though it only filmed in two cities — Mutare and Harare — Spotlight lit up the screen with raw, unfiltered Zimbabwean talent. Each city produced 8 captivating episodes, introducing the nation to names that would go on to shape the modern music scene: Rockie Jophats, Leonard Mapfumo, Rute Mbangwa, and the iconic Tambaoga, among others. And who could forget “Culture Kid” from Mutare — a blazing young dancehall artist who left an indelible impression. Though the full journey of Spotlight was cut short, its legacy lives in the names it helped launch and the fire it sparked in Zimbabwe’s entertainment culture.
Fast forward to today — the technology, the hunger, and the talent have only grown sharper. The dream remains the same: to build platforms that uplift, energize, and celebrate Zimbabwean youth. With local music now dominating our airwaves, dance floors, kombis, festivals — and even finding footing on international stages — the time has come for a new era in talent discovery.
