Can eels actually migrate from the ponds of Sydney to New Caledonia? 🌏🐍
Right now, thousands of Long-finned and Short-finned eels are beginning one of nature’s most mysterious odysseys: a 2,000km+ trek from Sydney’s freshwater ponds to the deep ocean trenches near New Caledonia.
Here are the facts on this incredible "one-way" retirement plan:
The Journey: They travel through roughly 5km of drains and other terrain to reach the ocean.
The Transformation: Before leaving, they undergo "silvering." Their snouts sharpen, their eyes double in size for deep-sea vision, and their digestive tract shuts down. They won't eat for the entire journey.
The Destination: They navigate out of Sydney Harbour and the Hacking River, hitching a ride on the East Australian Current to the Coral Sea.
The Deep End: They breed in tropical depths up to 300m–600m deep.
The Legacy: Once they spawn, the adults die. Their larvae (leptocephali) drift on currents for up to a year before finding their way back to the exact same Sydney streams their parents left.
