One of the most disappointing reading experiences I’ve ever had...knowing that there is no way in all things holy that book 7, the conclusion, can top this masterpiece. It can’t get better. It can’t. Impossible. This is peak. Not just my favorite Sun Eater — this is a top 10 book, EASILY. How was that even possible? 10 ⭐️.

By Blood, By Salt was a solid book. No weak spots, just quality all around. I read it because we are judges for the SPFBO Contest of Champions. I’d set people’s expectations that this can read more like a prologue and has a slower pace (by design). It’s a military fantasy with a rich world and fascinating character dynamics. Lovely to see a self-pub book have nuance that a lot of traditionally published books lack. It handles the oppressed vs oppressor theme very well. Only drawback is it reads like a prologue (again, by design) — but I’m invested and there’s a lot to appreciate in this book. Sitting at a 4 ⭐️ for my gut reaction. More to come in our pod review. Now onto Disquiet Gods!

Monte Cristo took me the whole month! Overall I’m glad I read it, but I understand why there are so many abriged versions. Slogged in the middle 600-700 pages and was very easy to set down. Sitting around a 3 ⭐️ for my rating. Not upset, not overjoyed. Plenty of interesting characters and themes to discuss, but my emotions piqued in the first few hundred pages before losing some of that momentum throughout. It ended very nicely though. A classic for a reason of course, so there’s lots to discuss in the review! Including my thoughts that Alexandre Dumas definitely pumped out this word count as if he was being paid per line 😂. (Come to find out I think that’s somewhat true — this was initially a serialized release and he might bave been paid per line/word/page.) Will be a fun review, now onto my first V. E. Schwab for our Book Club.
