2026 is here, and it’s time to get back to work - koi content, incoming! 🏆

Let’s kick things off with a truly stunning Kohaku exhibited at AEKS ’25. She deservedly took Mature Champion and had such a commanding presence in the vat, one of those koi that stops you in your tracks. I spent a good while appreciating this one. A real Matsue diamond.

Note: For those looking to purchase Volume Eight and others from the collection, the website shop is currently offline for maintenance. It will be reopening shortly - more on that soon 🔥

🎄 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🎉

Another year has flown by, which feels mildly terrifying! I wish to extend my deepest thanks for the support and custom of our readers, followers and industry sponsors - it makes World of Nishikigoi possible!

Wherever you are and however you celebrate, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and may the new year bring you good health, joy and plenty of koi!

Best Wishes & Happy Koi Keeping,
Liam

Once again, my Christmas post features the Grand Champion Koi I have photographed throughout the year in chronological order. Congratulations and thank you to all those who exhibited their koi in 2025 for our enjoyment - let’s see your beautiful koi again in 2026!

I have an apology to make! 🫣🐟

In the Koi SOS series in Volume Eight, my new biological filter finally gets the aeration it deserves, thanks to Brandon at Aqua Aeration Systems Ltd. No spoilers - promise!

However… like a complete numpty, I managed to print Aqua Aeration “Solutions” instead of “Systems.” Entirely my mistake, and sincere apologies for any confusion caused. Rest assured, no rival company has appeared overnight trying to steal Brandon’s name!

For clarity, Brandon has spent many years building his ever-growing range of quality products. The time, testing, and investment that goes on behind the scenes is often underestimated - but the proof really is in the pudding. These are well-trusted products, used by koi keepers and koi shows across the UK.

P.S. I haven’t been bribed to say this… although Brandon did strongly suggest I’d be “black and blue” by the next koi show if I didn’t issue a public apology. 😄

One week till Christmas - sorry for the reminder! 😂

I want to take a moment to shine a light on our trade supporters, many of whom have supported me since day one. Launching and maintaining a printed koi publication in a digital-first world is no small task. Yet, thanks to the loyal backing of the koi trade and the enthusiasm of our growing readership, we’re still here and printing great content!

Thank you for your continued trust and support. Here’s to promoting good practices, to collaboration, to your future success, and to all things nishikigoi! 🙏🏆

Listed in order of appearance in Volume Eight. Be sure to pay them a visit or check out their websites! 🔥

You only saw her head the other day... 😮

So I think it's only fair to show the whole koi!

Dainichi Showa - Miyabi Prize 90bu at the 2024 AJKS. According to Siebe van Tilburg, she's now handled by Odakan and measured 98cm when exhibited at the ZNA International 2025. I'll see if I can link his video in the comments. Enjoy 😊

Ever looked at a Grand Champion and thought… really?!

Well, you’re not alone.

I may be there to photograph the koi, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get passionate (and sometimes irate) about the winners. Instead of debating from the sidelines, I sat down with four trained Koi Judges and asked the questions many hobbyists ‘think’ but rarely voice.

In the next volume, we explore why koi judging so often divides the hobby, how judges strive for fairness in a system that can never be purely black-and-white, and why disagreement doesn’t automatically mean something went wrong.

This isn’t about defending koi judges, nor is it about shooting them down. It’s me, honestly, trying to understand why judging at hobbyist koi shows seems so difficult to get right. Part One drops in Volume Eight - you know what to do! 😉

⚠️ Important reminder: due to Christmas post, subscriptions for Volume Eight close on 14th December. After that date, we won’t be accepting new subscribers again until Volume Nine (2026). If you’d like to receive Volume 8, please make sure you subscribe before the deadline:

Thank you for the continued support - I can’t wait for you to read it.
