Last meal in Kyoto before heading back to Tokyo.

I found this cozy little vegan restaurant a short walk from Shijo-Omiya station. The food and presentation was great at Vegetarian Cafe Ren Shijo Omiya. A great way to end my trip in Kyoto.

A side trip to Arashiyama.

I spotted on the map that there was a bamboo forest here, so I took the bus up from downtown Kyoto. It was a little bit of a wet day but walking through these towering bamboo was such an experience.

I walked back next to the Katsura River and caught some amazing displays of kimono textiles in backlit pillars at Kimono Forest, right next to the Arashiyama tram station.

A peaceful relaxing day!

Before leaving Himeji, I found a cosy vegan cafe just down the street from the castle.

Il-riccio is a wonderful vegetarian/vegan restaurant between the castle and the railway station and makes an ideal stop for a quick or hearty meal.

Day trip to Himeji.

I had to take this trip after learning about the magnificent Himeji Castle. What a place! From getting off the train, I could see the main tower of the castle in the distance, standing prominently over the city.

It was a beautiful day and I spent around two hours touring the grounds and inside this early 1600's castle. Getting to the top floor of the main tower provided amazing views of Himeji and the mountains in the distance.

CoCo Ichibanya Keihan Shichijo, Kyoto.

I was wandering past this place trying to find somewhere to eat, and the smell of curry drew me over. This is actually a chain restaurant and I had no idea until I checked out the menu, and to my surprize they offered a vegan curry option. I did double check on their website and they list all ingredients and nutritional information which is great.

So, I parked myself inside on a bar stool and ordered via the QR code online. Nice thing is you can order different sizes of rice and a couple of different options for the vegetables for the curry. A very delicious, quick, filling dish that came to under $10 CAD. Bargain!

Overlooking Kyoto, this amazing complex with the Kiyomizu-dera Buddhist temple is definitely a must-see. Once again, the architecture is incredible, and looking at the main Buddhist hall built into the cliff side with its giant timber structure is such a sight.

I enjoyed the afternoon strolling around and taking in the sights and of course checking out the fabulous views down over the city of Kyoto. Then I wandered down the tiny road through the expanive Otani cemetery, heading back into the city for more adventures.

Ah, my final stop in Japan, Kyoto!

Wandering around admiring the architecture, the gardens, and navigating the bustling streets, this is a wonderful place to finish my tour.

Day trip to Nara, Japan.

After getting a little disorientated with the subway system, and asking for help, I managed to get onto the right subway and travelled from Osaka to Nara.

Nara is known for its abundance of beautiful buildings, parks and deer, and I certainly passed by many deer as I made my way around. I definitely walked many kilometres as I viewed Todai-ji-Kaidan-in, Todai-ji-Daibutsuden with the great Buddha Hall, Todai-ji-Ngatsu-do with it's great views over Nara, Todai-ji-Shoro bell tower, and Todai-ji-Namdaimon, the impressive grand south gate.

After a long day of walking, I jumped onto the subway train to head back to Osaka, but realized it was a special express service that only stopped at a few stops, so I did miss my stop and ended up having to backtrack on a regular subway service - another adventurous day!

At Shama Vegetarian Indian Restaurant

Although vegetarian, the restaurant has vegan options and the server customized the set meal for me. And what a set meal it was! I felt like the dishes were not going to end and it was an amazing treat. Salad, soup, 2 curries with rice, a couple of side snacks, and I didn't even get a photo of the drink and dessert that was included!

Highly recommend this Indian Restaurant situated just a short walk north of Dotonbori, Osaka.

My first day out: Osaka Castle

Just a short subway ride from my hotel, I visited the beautiful Osaka Castle. Set in large, expansive grounds, with the site dating back to the late 1500's, the castle has been rebuilt and is now home to exhibitions and cultural history throughout its several floors. The top floor provides a wonderful panoramic of Osaka and it's where I spent most of my time admiring the views!
