Just saw Alien: Romulus—-in the IMAX format. It was long, and could have been edited in two ways: the exposition at the beginning and one or two of the unlikely scenarios (that seemingly MUST accompany action movies in the present day). While the writing was solid, no Alien/s films have quite matched the character impact of the first film. (I think it’s the character development, anyway.) And Alien (1979) didn’t need a twist every few minutes during its climax .
But Alien: Romulus was exhilarating. The special FX grabbed me, and the cinematography was clever. The ending was different than I expected, knowing the series. Homage—to old and new media—in several scenes and a character.
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment.
