Some commercial drivers in the Cape Coast Metropolis have expressed opposition to the proposed 15 percent reduction in transport fares, scheduled to take effect nationwide on Saturday, 24 May 2025.

The new fares follow negotiations between the Ministry of Transport and transport unions, with the reduction attributed to the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against major foreign currencies and a subsequent decline in fuel prices.

However, a survey conducted by Radio Central Business revealed that several drivers in Cape Coast are dissatisfied with the directive. Some indicated they intend to maintain current fares despite the nationwide adjustment.

According to the drivers, fuel prices represent only one component of their operational costs. They argue that the prices of spare parts, engine oil, gas, and food items remain high, and claim that a blanket reduction in fares is unfair.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Senior Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Alex Mustapha, confirmed the new fares in an interview with Radio Central. He clarified that the decision was not based solely on fuel prices and warned that any driver who fails to comply with the directive would face sanctions, including possible expulsion from the Union.

The Cape Coast Youth Development Association, in partnership with the Ghana Education Service, has officially launched the inaugural edition of Edufest 2025 in Cape Coast. The event is being held under the theme “Empowering Minds, Shaping the Future: Advancing Innovation, Equity, and Excellence in Education.” The theme reflects a call to action for collaborative efforts toward improving learning outcomes and promoting inclusive education in the region.

Speaking at the launch, the Financial Secretary of the Cape Coast Youth Development Association, Mr. Daniel Essel, outlined a range of activities planned as part of the festival. These include educational exhibitions, STEM competitions among schools, career and mentorship sessions, entrepreneurship challenges, business pitch contests, panel discussions on academic advancement and scholarship opportunities, as well as a performing arts segment. A special cultural initiative, dubbed “Cape Coast: Back to Our Roots,” will feature a reunion and a “Rep Your School” segment aimed at fostering community identity and school pride.

The Omanhene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Dr. Kwesi Atta II, who graced the occasion, reiterated the importance of education and urged parents to take a more active role in their children’s academic development. He expressed concern over the increasing use of English as a home language, cautioning that it may negatively affect children’s foundational understanding and cultural grounding.

Also addressing the gathering was the Queenmother of Efutu and former Central Regional Director of Education, Professor Nana Amba Eyiaba. She identified a number of challenges confronting the youth in Cape Coast, including limited financial support, absentee parenting, truancy, and the prevalence of teenage pregnancy. She called for urgent and coordinated action to address these systemic issues, emphasizing that meaningful progress requires the collective effort of all stakeholders.

The launch of Edufest 2025 marks a significant step in fostering educational excellence and youth development in the Cape Coast Metropolis. Organizers say the initiative will serve as a platform for dialogue, innovation, and empowerment, ultimately contributing to the transformation of the region through education.

UPDATE:
The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly has commenced the rehabilitation of a public toilet facility located in the Silent Brotherhood community, as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental sanitation and public health.

Previously in a state of disrepair and marked by poor hygienic conditions, the facility has undergone a major clean-up exercise. An attendant has been engaged to oversee daily operations and ensure that patrons comply with a pay-before-use policy aimed at sustaining the facility.

Although the rehabilitation process is still ongoing, the Ward Coordinator for Silent Brotherhood, Mr. Prince Apprey, has given the assurance that outstanding works will be completed within one week. Upon full completion, the facility is expected to offer a safer and more sanitary environment to residents and visitors alike.

Mr. Apprey further called on community members to cooperate in maintaining the facility. He underscored the importance of collective responsibility, especially given the toilet’s central location within a densely populated residential area.

Recalling the adverse impact of the facility’s previous condition on public health, Mr. Apprey urged residents to act as custodians and remain vigilant in safeguarding the facility. He warned that individuals found misusing or contributing to the deterioration of the revamped public toilet will be handed over to the appropriate municipal authorities for prosecution.

The initiative forms part of broader measures by local authorities to combat the threat of sanitation-related diseases, including the recent outbreak of cholera in parts of the country.

The recent outbreak of cholera in Cape Coast has once again drawn attention to the poor state of public toilet facilities in the area.

A visit by our news team to one of the facilities revealed disturbing conditions. The absence of an attendant has created a free-for-all situation, where users access the toilet without paying the required fee. Even more worrying is the fact that the structure lacks doors, encouraging open defecation at the entrance of the facility.

Residents who spoke to our team expressed concern over the insanitary state of the premises, blaming the situation on lack of supervision and routine maintenance.

The Ward Coordinator of the Silent Brotherhood, Mr. Prince Apprey, has acknowledged the problem. He said plans are underway to clean the facility, install a gate, and ensure it is locked at night to prevent further abuse and deterioration.

He gave the assurance that steps would be taken to address the concerns raised, as part of efforts to improve sanitation and help contain the spread of cholera
