The front page of today's Times makes it seem likely that the cabinet will agree to the guidance from the EHRC that effectively bans trans people from public spaces, by banning us from using toilets and changing rooms congruent with our gender, including the NHS and care homes. This comes shortly after it was announced that the government will replace the outgoing transphobic chair of the EHRC with... another transphobe.

This government guidance looks suspiciously like a new 'Section 28', but for gender.

So it seems the so-called NC21 amendment to the Data Bill, that would have removed trans people's rights to have our correct gender marker on passports and other documents has been defeated by quite a large margin. Thankfully the government did not support it and has undertaken not to introduce this change by other means (if you can believe anything they say!)

It never stops!

Today Parliament will be voting on an amendment to the Data Bill that will prevent trans people from having our correct gender marker listed on passports and other documents, outing us to airport authorities, something the Gender Recognition Act was designed to prevent.

As if that wasn't enough, tomorrow a motion will be debated by GPs that, if passed, would prevent trans people from having our correct gender markers on our NHS records. Trans women, for example, are at risk of breast cancer and things like bacterial vaginosis, so this would put trans people at risk.

Even if one or other of these two attacks on trans rights fail, we can expect more in the coming weeks and months now that all the worst transphobes have been emboldened to attack us, ensuring a hostile environment for trans people.

The Football Association (FA) has banned trans women from women's football. They say "The Supreme Court’s ruling on the 16 April means that we will be changing our policy. Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented from 1 June 2025."

They go on to say, "This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science, or the operation of the policy in grassroots football then we would review it and change it if necessary."

Except there hasn't been a material change in any of those things. They are making it so obvious that they always wanted to do this and now they can use the Supreme Court ruling as a pretext, despite the ruling explicitly not saying that policies have to change.

What is Trans Liberation?

Over recent years we have seen much greater visibility and acceptance of trans people in the media. This is a good thing. However along with it has gone a backlash. The number of worldwide trans murders is going up year on year. There have been numerous attacks on trans rights in the US and Brazil. In Britain, the debate around reforming the Gender Recognition Act to give more rights to trans people has met with terrific resistance and the ‘debate’ (such as it is) has become toxic with celebrities like Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling and Father Ted writer Graham Linehan weighing in against the fight for trans rights. We need to campaign for trans rights as part of wider movements for LGBTQ+ rights and fundamental human rights. Trans liberation is the fight to liberate trans people from oppression whilst also fighting for human liberation.
