In honor of Disability Pride Month, the Conclave Cast would like to highlight the novel Winterlight by Kristen Britton.

Winterlight is the seventh and most recent novel of Britton’s classic Green Rider Series, following king’s messenger and sometimes avatar of the death god, Karigan G'ladheon, as she attempts to help her land fend off the return of Mornhavon the Black and his colonizing army known as ‘Second Empire’. Winterlight picks up where the previous book left off, not long after Karigan was captured and tortured by Second Empire. Throughout the book Karigan grapples with the trauma of what she's been through, mostly expressed by her torturer who, now dead, has attached her ghost to Karigan. Tormented by the torturer’s ghost, Karigan struggles to recover from her injuries and go on as normal while her friends and colleagues try and often fail to understand why her daily tasks are still impacted by her mental health. The very literal presence of the torturous ghost and the fact in the fact that no one but Karigan is able to hear or see her forms a very strong exploration of trauma, depression, and mental illness, as well as the dangers of disregarding invisible disability.

In honor of Pride Month, the Conclave Cast would like to honor Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy, authors of Once and Future and The Sword in the Stars.

Through their work, Capetta and McCarthy have brought us a magical queering of the legend of King Arthur, mixing science fiction, corporate greed, and gay and le***an romance with the legend, breathing new life into one of the foundational pillars of the fantasy genre. Taking place in the far distant future, the duology follows Ari, a young woman on the run, who also happens to be the 42nd incarnation of King Arthur. When she pulls the sword from an old tree and awakens Merlin, her magical adventures begin. But as fantastic as her story is, it also remains consistently grounded in real world struggles and discrimination and in many different kinds of LGTBQIA+ pride.

In honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, this week the Conclave Cast is highlighting one of our favourites when it comes to combining epic fantasy with unrestrained sapphic romance: Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff.

Book two of the Nevernight Chronicles expands the series in new and compelling ways, including a dive into LGBTQIA+ themes and romance that takes the spotlight. Gladiator fights and deadly assassins, as well as characters you hate to love and love to hate—what more could you ask for from the sequel to Nevernight?

In honor of Pride Month, the Conclave Cast would like to highlight Seanan McGuire and her novella ‘Every Heart a Doorway.’

McGuire, openly bisexual herself, has written numerous novellas and novels containing strong LGBTQIA+ representation, from her handling of trans male chemistry professor Walter Davies, to the growth of bisexual fae prince Quentin Sollys. In Every Heart a Doorway we see her first openly asexual character, protagonist Nancy, who found acceptance and home in the halls of the underworld only to end up stranded back in our world surrounded by parents and to society that neither understand nor welcome her. Unsure what else to do for her, Nancy's parents send her to Elinor West’s school for wayward children, a boarding school for teenagers who have traveled to a fantasy world and are now faced with reintegrating into our own, but when tragedy strikes, reintegration becomes the least of Nancy's worries.

In celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, the Conclave Cast would like to highlight The Young Elites by Marie Lu.

When Adelina survives the deadly blood fever that killed many and scarred the ones who managed to overcome the sickness, she thinks she has just been left with the markings of a malfetto. While fleeing from a life her father is thrusting on her, Adelina discovers that she is one of the few survivors that possesses magical skill – and hers is a deadly one.

Sought after by all sides of the bubbling political turmoil, Adelina must figure out who she can trust to use her abilities for good – something which is diametrically opposed to the nature of her gift. She will have to control the darkness rising in her heart as she toes the line of what it means to be good and evil.

In honor of Jewish-American Heritage Month, the Conclave Cast would like to highlight the novella ‘In Shadowed Dreams’, written by Conclave Cast member S. Judith Bernstein.

Bernstein is a Jewish American author committed to writing their stories through the lens of Jewish culture and heritage. In their debut novella, In Shadowed Dreams, serialized on Kindle-Vella, magic is real and the boundaries between fiction and reality are not sturdy as most believe. When protagonists Alex and Raven find themselves being hunted through New York City by those who covet magic, Raven reveals that she is actually a see-er, a mage with the gift of foresight, and, in a moment of desperation, blends the worlds of fiction and reality in order to hand her body over to a fictional assassin – but rather than fixing their problems, it's only the beginning.
