Anthropomorphic Sword Design

We often talk about how the La Tené culture was a broad cultural trend and that although we call these people "Celts" today this is not a distinction the Celts themselves would have recognised.

However the similarity in trends such as Anthropomorphic Sword design from Ireland to Hungary is quite stark!

1. Celtic sword from Switzerland and (ca. 60 BC)

2. Mouriès (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Tesson (Charente-Maritime), France 2nd-1st c. BC

3. Reichstadtmuseum Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany (2nd c. BC)

4. From Gališ-Lovačka hills, western Ukraine (3/2 c. BC).

5. Ritually ‘killed’ Celtic sword with proto-anthropomorphic hilt from Szendrő, northern Hungary (3rd c. BC)

6. Celtic sword with anthropomorphic hilt from Saint-André-de-Lidon (Charente-Maritime) France (2/1 c. BC)

 7. Celtic sword with anthropomorphic hilt, from a warrior burial at North Grimston (Yorkshire), England

(late 2nd century BC)

8. Bronze Celtic sword hilt from Ballyshannon Bay (Donegal) northwestern Ireland

9. Reconstruction of British Example by Jake Powing

Thanks to Balkan Celts for the information and collation of the example images

In response a question a received at the Trimontium talk I've just realised where the question came from. I think I misspoke and said that war chariots on the continent ended after the Migration Period (which would mean around the 3rd century BCE)

What I meant to say was it ended in before the Late La Tene period. So yes, indeed, there are numerous examples on the continent in the 1st and 2nd century BCE, but very few after this period on the continent. Where as war chariots were still being used in the British Ilses during the Roman occupation of the 1st and 2nd century AD

My apologies for the confusion not sure if the person is a trust member but hope this answer gets to them
