Music Producers let me help save you from years of wasted time in 3 steps:
1) Don’t over think it – this applies to literally ANYTHING you do in the music business shy of signing a contract. The industry is all about moments, if you hesitate, the moment will pass. This is from the creative process while writing a melody, on through the mythical “singular act of being discovered” (sorry but it doesn’t really happen like that).
2) Don’t start off trying to learn how to sound like “_______” - if you start by instantly going to YouTube and looking up _______’s bass tutorial and that’s the only way you learn, you’ll either, A) struggle for years to unlearn someone else’s style by either burying it in other artist’s sounds or altering what you’ve learned to create your own sound, or B) you end up sounding like a sub-par (and slightly behind the curve) version of the artist you wanted to sound like. Instead, open your DAW of choice and learn about your tools at your disposal and how to operate them. This is single-handedly one of the most effective means of not only becoming a great producer but also this will allow you to discover your own sound much faster, with less barriers.
3) The music can be as simple or as complex as you want but keep the branding simple – branding is a crucial part of any business and if you’re in (or want to be in) the music industry, then you are your own business. Your product is music, your sales pitch is your story or content, and the knot that ties them together is your brand. One of the main reasons brands are so iconic is the simplicity in their logo. Some so simple we even say hey, that cloud looks like the NIKE logo (for example), an image so simple even a crude version is easily recognizable. The math: Simplicity = Easily remembered and recalled, Brand recognition = Important to brand survival, so Brand x Simple = A Big Step Towards Brand Longevity
These steps don’t promise you a record deal, but you’ll more than likely be happier in your journey, when you discover the real YOU behind your music, that’s what matters.
