Why Africa? I get asked that question a lot since moving to SA. As a writer, you would think it would be an easy response. But it’s always difficult to find the words cause it’s really a feeling. The moment I landed on the Continent on my first visit in 2008, I knew… because I felt… different. Back then, I couldn’t describe it, the closest word was freedom. My joy was not envied. My peace was not judged. My freedom was not constrained. And this feeling was something I had never felt my entire life in the States. I realize that protecting your peace is revolutionary and not everyone is trained nor willing to get off the insane and traumatic roller coaster. But I’m grateful to Africa, for catching me when I made the jump and allowing my dizzy self to rest and feel unedited and unapologetic Black Woman Joy.
And that’s why I created the Wander Woman Retreat… I wanted to give Black Women permission to get off the roller coaster, even if only for 10 days, and experience a little joy on the Continent. So, if you’re in need of rest and community with Black women, join me in Morocco or South Africa this year and experience the feeling of peace, joy, and freedom. Find more info
Happy Africa Day!
